French DJ and producer Pierre Troel (a.k.a. Fulgeance) has a penchant for infusing futuristic beats into club funk. This is immediately exemplified in the opening cut, “La Cite Des Anges,” where icy keyboard notes follow stuttered drum patterns and handclap rhythms. What’s also apparent is the man’s love for analog synths. He cites Giorgio Moroder’s work in the '70s and '80s as a huge influence, as well as Bernard Fevre’s pioneering recordings and bygone experimental electro recordings by Moggi. But throughout To All of You, Fulgeance also expresses a deep love for soul and disco (“Espresso Freddo (I Athina Einai Teleia)”), Detroit-flavored instrumental hip-hop (“Montefalco Mato” and “London Falling”) and vintage krautrock (“Sweet Sofia”). Check out “One for Bestown,” where drum patterns and labyrinthine changes somehow flow with a smooth kinetic groove. Fulgeance also throws in a few incredible remixes, including Josip Klobucar’s skittering standout reworking of “Hiver Normand.”
