Album Review

Album photography for To Know That You're Alive, the fifth studio effort from grunge-pop rockers Kutless, shows the five-piece strolling through picturesque London locales — the elegant, monochromatic shots could lead some to believe the group has gone the way of Brit-pop. Not so fast. While the band did make a trek across the pond to record with the London Session Orchestra, the music hasn't endured a mass makeover. If anything, To Know that You're Alive is more of the same Creed-meets-Nickelback-meets-3 Doors Down methodology of records past, except grander and with an even higher melodic quotient. The more populist approach is helped in part by the involvement of three-time MercyMe producer Pete Kipley, a bona fide adult contemporary expert who makes sure Kutless keeps rocking, but not to the extent that it alienates the thousands who discovered them post-Strong Tower, the group's best-selling worship album. It's with that audience in mind that huge anthems like "Complete," "Promise You," and "Guiding Me Home" exist — the latter is actually a dead ringer for Daughtry's "Home," right down to its title. That's not to say Kutless doesn't attempt the unattempted. The occasional classic rock riff ("The Feeling"), new wave synths ("Overcoming Me"), experimentation with dynamics ("Dying to Become"), and symphonic interlude ("Sleeping City") are a testament that the band is trying its best to outgrow the post-grunge criticisms that have dogged them since their inception. For the most part they succeed, but their points of reference are still too overly familiar to help them come from under the shadow of drone-heard corporate rock.

Simply the best....

This is my favorite band...and here is my review...

The Feeling - This is a great opener...a harder song on the album...a great fist pumper...10/10

Sleeping City - A pretty interlude that flows very well into To Know That Your Alive...10/10

To Know That Your Alive - My favorite song on the album.....very epic with hard rock guitars and beautiful strings and amazing vocals...10/10

The Disease And The Cure - Pretty intense song with a pretty bridge that flows into a sick guitar interlude with along with a nasty scream...my second favorite song on the album...10/10

Complete - A very good slower song with a good message...beautiful vocals and strings....10/10

The Rescue - The heaviest song on the album...my third favorite...very nice guitar and drum work...and some sick screaming...10/10

Promise You - Not my favorite but still a good song with a good message...very nice chorus....8.5/10

Guiding Me Home - Good song with a good message...Once again not my favorite...I have heard better slow songs...but ok all together...7/10

Overcoming Me - A pretty cool song with some awesome drum work...not the best hard song I have ever heard but pretty cool altogether...9/10

I Do Not Belong - My favorite slow song on this album...very beautiful strings and vocals...very excellent message...10/10

Loud - A fairly decent song....a little too short in my opinion...and the guitar work wasn't all that astounding...but it was ok...prolly my least favorite song on this album...5/10

Dying To Become - A very cool song with pretty piano and strings and guitar...I like the experimental sound it has....10/10

You - A pretty song that has a different sound to it...can be a love song or a Christian song...either way it's a good song....8/10

This is Kutless' best work up to date...They recorded it at Abbey Road in London....has the best sounds and I think that they should have more recognition than the overrated band Skillet...buy this album...simply incredible....

Awesome album!!

I love this album and the great messages that the songs give. I love Kutless, and by their music you can tell their hearts are all for the Lord, and that's the way it should be. Jesus loves you Kutless and so do I! This is a must have album.

Kutless!

I'm a big Skillet fan, and Kutless is in my range. I just got this album, my first of Kutless.

The Feeling - Good opening, just a little short but a great tune. 9/10

Sleeping City - Alone, it's pretty good, probably an 8/10, but when it flows into To Know That You're Alive, it gets a 10/10

To Know That You're Alive - My favorite song on the album, period. I absolutely love the guitar and drum work in this song. The great lyrics add to an even more fantastic song. 10/10

The Disease & The Cure - Great tune, rather good lyrics too. 8/10

Complete - Absolutely wonderful message, pretty good tune too. 10/10

The Rescue - Like a more-Christian version of Skillet's Hero. I like Hero a lot more though, this one has an okay tune and okay lyrics. 8/10

Promise You - A nice message, and a nice slow song. 8.5/10

Guiding Me Home - I love Home by Daughtry, and this is reminiscent of it. It's not a copy, but a good reminder. The message is rather powerful. 9/10

Overcoming Me - At first, I didn't understand what this song was talking about. It's a bit confusing. Good tune though. 7.5/10

I Do Not Belong - This song…chills. Loooove it. Second favorite on the album. Amazing tune, and the lyrics are fantastic "I do not belong in a world of broken pieces" 10/10

Loud - Excellent. The song itself is fantastic, and the lyrics are awesome. A nice break in between slow songs. 10/10

Dying to Become - Strings and piano, a nice addition. The guitar interlude actually works well too. Pretty wonderful slow song with some meaningful lyrics and vocals to back it up. 10/10

You - Not a bad ending, but the song itself, eh. Good message as a Christian or a love song, but not the best. 8/10

Overall, it's about a 9/10. Not bad, I'm ready to hear more.

Overall, I think that's a
