does funny little hipster dances on stage. yay new ep!

To Swift Mars

Excellent production and concise songwriting, perhaps a personal best for the artist. Various moods are created and the spatial sense of instrumentation and vocals make it satisfying listening. I like the playing time; long enough to make the point, short enough to keep it interesting. Enjoyable.

JJ's review - To Swift Mars EP

Who?

Cale Parks has been in the music scene for quite some time. When he isn't working on his solo project, he has been drumming and playing the keys for Aloha, White Williams & Joan Of Arc. His experience shows in To Swift Mars, Parks 3rd solo LP. Parks brings a familiar laid back vibe to the scene, all the while bringing his own sound to this 80's-ish electronic-ish EP.

How is it?

The minimalist style in To Swift Mars is really what makes this EP stand out. With this style, Cale Parks shines. "Eyes Won't Shut" is a dreamy, to the point, opener. The verses leave me wanting more from an opening track, but the chorus wins me over with simple instrumentation and vocal melodies. The quick drums in "Running Family" lead the song and keep it going. It has a trance feel to the whole thing. It's like I'm lost in a daydream. The synths really add to this track and keep true to the simplistic style of the EP.

"Knight Conversation" has dual vocals that really work well for the song. It's easy on the ears and a bright addition to the darker sound of the EP. "Crystal Air" is more of a sleeper to me, not the highest moment on this EP for sure. Things quickly pick back up on "One at a Time". Snaps, claps, and everything in between. The smooth production easily helps the song to tower above the rest. This song carries its own on the EP and is one of the key tracks to listen to. If you want a laid back, simple, easy listening EP to listen to, then this is the perfect one for you. Give it a few spins, it will surely grow on you.
