Album Review

If you're not satisfied with your heavy metal until it leaves you with a bona fide splitting headache, then Orlando's Khann are a must-hear. Their 2007 release, Tofutopia, mines similar territory as acts like the Dillinger Escape Plan, but there are also a few surprise musical detours here and there — it's not all pedal-to-the-metal cacophony from front to back. That said, these "detours" are kept to a minimum, so there's plenty of noise to go around. As with many other bands that specialize in the same extreme metal schtick, it's hard to decipher one song from another — each track pretty much starts the same, and is equally as over the top as the one before and the one after it. Extreme metal fanatics should be impressed with how Khann keep the intensity steady throughout Tofutopia, but if you're seeking metallic variation, this is the wrong place to find it.

Amazing!

This album is unreal. It varies between minimalistic grind and really sludgy stuff. The songwriting and musicianship is impeccable. Andrew their guitarist has the best sense of melody I've heard in a long time from heavy music. And Josh the drummer is just all over the place. He has a very busy style that is just punk as anything and perfect for this band. Do yourself a favor and see them live. Number eight "bird" is just crushingly heavy.

vegan DIY death-core

Being from my hometown, Orlando usually puts you in my good book. Name dropping Reversal of Man and the Jesus Lizard on your press sheet earns you my respect, and naming your album Tofutopia because you're vegan wins you a spot in my heart. As for the music, it's rowdy, gruesome stuff. The production is too rustic to call it death metal. It's DIY--death--core.
