Animal Collective co-founder Panda Bear (a.k.a. Noah Lennox) pursues his infatuation with ‘60s-era vocal groups into strangely beautiful terrain on his fourth solo album. Tomboy finds Lennox constructing sturdier melodic structures and allowing his lyric to surface more clearly. The mood on this album is dreamy and nostalgic, taking the lush pop sensibility of Brian Wilson and filtering it through the exoticism of the Cocteau Twins. A beachside mood pervades “Surfer’s Hymn” and “Friendship Bracelet,” invoked through plangent vocal harmonies and woozy instrumental murmurs (not to mention ocean wave effects). Matters get positively giddy on the reverb-drenched “You Can Count On Me” and almost childlike on the ghostly, clattering “Alsatian Darn.” Even at his oddest moments, Lennox infuses his creations with a wistful dignity, rising to poignant (if spacey) heights on the closing track “Benfica.” Tomboy shows distinct signs of Panda Bear emerging from his cavern of sonic murk into the clear light of heartfelt expression.

Sometimes an album is meant to be listened to. Listened to as you’re driving. Listened to in the background of various activities. Listened to while working out. But sometimes an album is meant to be experienced.

What Noah Lennox has created with Tomboy is a carefully crafted work of art. He makes music because he loves it and you can feel that within it. You feel it in his voice which echoes through the soundscapes he creates. He’s made a place for us to live in for fifty minutes that is unlike anything else that is out there. From the glittering, upbeat Surfers Hymn, to the frantic lurch of Last Night at the Jetty, to the beautiful melancholy of Scherezade and straight on though to the wide-open spaces of closer Benfica, Tomboy draws you in from the opening a cappella measures of You Can Count On Me. With final mix by Sonic Boom, the minimalistic approach to music has never felt bigger or fuller. While some people will be looking for another intricately layered Person Pitch, you can find that, just in a new way. Don’t get caught up in what you expect to hear and just let it come inside and love it for the beauty that it is.

I didn't think the record would be nearly as beautiful as the songs that I am hearing now. This is exceptionally beautiful and Panda Bear did such an amazing job making this record. You have an amazing mind and niche for music Panda. Thank you for making my day a little better with this unique and gorgeous record. Never stop making music.
Worth The Wait!!
Person Pitch was one of the most addictive, hypnotic, & psychedelic albums I've ever had the pleasure of coming across. It was a trippy and fulfilling experience that is still difficult to articulate. Upon my initial listen, Tomboy seems to pick up where it left off. I heard at least four songs in the months that preceded the full LP's release, so I kind of knew what to expect. I can still honestly say that I'm genuinely impressed with the cohesiveness of the final product. I love Animal Collective, but Noah's solo albums are somehow even more transcendent and awe-inspiring. The Needle Drop has a tendency of being overly critical with his reviews...Tomboy is awesome!
