Album Review

The full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy that launched the band to international superstardom, written almost entirely by Pete Townshend. Hailed as a breakthrough upon its release, its critical standing has diminished somewhat in the ensuing decades because of the occasional pretensions of the concept and because of the insubstantial nature of some of the songs that functioned as little more than devices to advance the rather sketchy plot. Nonetheless, the double album has many excellent songs, including "I'm Free," "Pinball Wizard," "Sensation," "Christmas," "We're Not Gonna Take It," and the dramatic ten-minute instrumental "Underture." Though the album was slightly flawed, Townshend's ability to construct a lengthy conceptual narrative brought new possibilities to rock music. Despite the complexity of the project, he and the Who never lost sight of solid pop melodies, harmonies, and forceful instrumentation, imbuing the material with a suitably powerful grace.

BETTER THAN THE OTHER ONE IN EVERY WAY... AND OH SO WORTH THE MONEY

although the classic verson (without the bonus Tracks) is a few dollars cheaper, and this version has only tracks on the second disc that a truely obsessive "Wholigan" would want, its still worth the extra money even if your not a heavy who fan. the reasons for this are as follows: 1. the Mix is far better 2. the version of "We're not gonna take it" has pete on lead vocals (on the second disc). 3. "Young Man's Blues" and "Cousin Kevin Model Child" are better mixes/versions than the ones available on "Odds And Sods" 4. "Dogs Part Two" is a great song and any fan of Keith Moons drumming deserves to hear this track. all in all, even though the bonus tracks are only for the really big who fans, its still worth the money because, who knows? maybe one day you'll be interested in the rare stuff, and the version available here is only half the price of the version available in stores (although the CD comes with some pretty nice photos that one might be interested in seeing but some can be seen online). so if your interested in buying the sensational rock opera that is "Tommy" then you would be smart to purchase this version. its an absolute "Sensation"

FINALLY!

I was waiting for this to come on iTunes. I already have this on CD, but everyone else needs to hear this. The sound quality here is far superior, although I have heard complaints in the past about poor mixing. Anyway, the outtakes are pretty cool too. Dogs Part Two is pretty sweet, as it is just Keith, Pete, and John jamming, and eaching contributing a solo. Sally Simpson is really cool, as you hear the complete process of how the Who worked in the studio. They screw up a bunch of times, and while Pete, Rog and Keith are joking around, John is still practicing his part. Trying to get Through has no substance at all in the way of lyrics, but the music is pretty cool. Miss Simpson is simply a slightly altered version of Sally Simpson. The last 5 songs are all demos by Pete. Young Man Blues is also really good. Christmas and Welcome are just instrumental versions of those songs, but are amazing (some of the best instrumental tracks I have ever heard). More importantly to me, the second CD has that harder edge to it for some reason. On the bonus CD you can really see the Who beginning to make that transition to Who's Next and Quadrophenia. As most of you already have the original tracks, pick up the bonus CD.

Few bands in the history of rock & roll were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notoriously intense live performances demonstrated. The group was a whirlwind of activity, as the wild Keith Moon fell over his drum kit and Pete Townshend leaped into the air with his guitar, spinning his right hand in exaggerated windmills. Vocalist Roger Daltrey strutted across the stage with a thuggish menace, as bassist John Entwistle...
