Album Review
A lot of bands claim not to fit any preexisting pop music genre, but few can back up such claims as convincingly as Minneapolis-based Halloween, Alaska, whose second album could be filed with equal inaccuracy in the pop, electronica, avant-garde, rock, and glitchcore categories. This is an album that opens with the jittery-jungly and swooningly melodic "A New Stain" before swelling to the sonically large and weirdly cathartic "Drowned" and then lapsing into the strangely pretty but melodically dry, lyrically whimsical and sonically spare "The Light Bulb Does." Then comes the biggest curveball of all: a contemplative deconstruction of LL Cool J's "I Can't Live Without My Radio," an interesting gamble that doesn't quite pay off — where other songs on this album come across as self-effacingly quirky, this one seems self-consciously clever. But the heavily compressed drums and '80s-refugee synthesizer on "Receiving Line" make it easy to forgive that misstep, as does the creepy-but-cool "Forever". (Instrumental versions, a Quicktime video and song lyrics are included on a bonus CD-ROM track.) Highly recommended.

I Knew Diers Would Be Heard
Even if it isn't my favorite Minneapolis band that's blowing up, (that distinction lies with the Love-cars) it is still a Diers, Olcott, Friesen & King ensemble which makes me smile just thinking of those four in the same room together. I'm overjoyed that this is on itunes, it's available and by God, it's wonderful. They rip live too, if you get a chance to catch 'em...I can only pray that this means somehow they have enthusiasm to continue on the Love-cars, for now, I'll appreciate the beautiful, haunting and rocking sounds of that great eternal Autumnal festival in our most Northwestern state.
Here We Go Again
I got my first dose on the second season of the OC.All the Arms Around You and its infecious bass beat seemed to stop me, and draw me in. Found it online and have been a fan since. If you don't have the self titled album pick it up with Too Tall to Hide. This Music will put you in a state of clarity and let the world move around you for once. Nice work agin fellas.
Very Strong
A great followup release and a strong alternative to those who like The Postal Service's more mellow offerings. Favorite songs include "Forever", "Drowned", and a fantastic cover of LL Cool J's "I Can't Live Without my Radio". A very promising band indeed.
