Upon its release in 1978, Tormato entered a world changed by punk rock, new wave, and disco. The band's brand of virtuoso progressive rock was all but dead and the 'dinosaur' comments thrived in earnest. However, while the band's time and place may have been come and gone, its compositional power is in surprisingly strong gear. "Release, Release" kicks with extra force. Steve Howe's guitars curl and slash around keyboardist Rick Wakeman's thrilling arpeggiated runs. Jon Anderson's vocals and spaced out lyrical concerns may lose some in the ozone. "Arriving UFO" and "Circus of Heaven" seem to be reaching for the band's past glories. No one, however, will mistake "Future Times/Rejoice," "Don't Kill the Whale," and "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" for anything other than a progressive rock band's look at the world. It is a leaner, meaner machine as bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White churn together in tight collaboration.

Disappointing to a Yes fan

This was quite a disappointment to many Yes fans when it first came out. I was one of those who wasn't too thrilled with it. After "Going for the One" which I thought was a great album, I expected more than trite new age/ecological buzz phrases (Don't Kill The Whale, Arriving UFO) Hearing Jon sing "Dig It" after the chorus of "Don't Kill The Whale" was almost comical. The musicianship is still excellent, however. The best tune I think is "On the Wings of Freedom." Chris Squire's bass on that number is remarkable.

One Word: Underrated!

Tormato was the first Yes album I ever heard. People such as Dhfalcon do not know what they are talking about. This album is one of Yes's very best! With a wide range of variety song to song. From the very mythological piece Madrigal, to the very heavy loud piece Release, Release. Yes's talent is shown in every one. This iTunes version, however, does not include the extra tracks, such as Abilene, or Some Are Born. Anyway, if you are a Yes fan and haven't heard these tracks, buy this masterpiece.
