Album Review

The Dead Can Dance progression continues with this video release, which starts out with a video for "Yulunga (Spirit Dance)" from Into the Labyrinth and then moves into a film of the live performance at the Mayfair in Santa Monica that forms the basis for the live album release. This is Dead Can Dance in confident form, performing a mixture of new material and standard repertoire, intercut with interview footage. It's intriguing to watch, though most will probably be more satisfied, on a repeat basis, with the album.

So much better without the grid!

I'm not really encyclopedic when it comes to DCD, but I've listened to quite a bit of their stuff over the years. And although the songs were really well written and the vocals were amazing, alot of it fell a little flat. Then I listened to this, and... what a difference! And the difference is-a live rhythm section. If you try to program these kinds of beats, all quantized and perfect, it doesn't breathe- it doesn't move. These kinds of rhythms need to be LOOSE-like they've been played for thousands of years. All the other stuff that I'VE heard of DCD had programmed beats. Did they ever go into the studio with live drummers? If not, then this amazing performance represents a glimpse of how some good songs could've been absolute jaw-droppers. Please don't think I'm slamming this band, cause I'm not, but I SOO wish that I'd been at this show. Very powerful stuff.

Pretension or dedication to artistry?

A reviewer on another DCD album called them pretentious, but I seriously think that Lisa and Brendan would find that concept amusing. When you see the earnestness with which they approached their artistry in the interviews in this movie, you will know they had no conscious proclivity toward pretension. They truly immersed themselves into the art of making music which was not limited by anyone else's boundaries. This work shows the genius which resulted from that process, and I, for one, will be eternally grateful for their inspiration. "Toward the Within' is a must-have! Buy it!
