It’s a challenge to merge disparate genres from across oceans, but the indie and electronic artists on this first disc of Tradi-Mods vs. Rockers are game as they reimagine the music of Congolese street bands. While Deerhoof highlight the likembe plucks of Kasai Allstars in the deconstructed rock of “Travel Broadens the Mind,” Mark Ernestus’ “Masikulu Dub” stretches out Konono Nº1’s distorted groove into echo-drenched dub-techno. Composer Jherek Bischoff rebuilds Konono’s “Kule Kule” entirely, arranging it as an Ennio Morricone-esque cinematic march.
