iTunes Review

Lonely hearts who stay in to watch King of Queens, guys who crush on the lady at the DMV window, people who relocate every few years to escape themselves vs. those who never change a single thing, a Fountains of Wayne album is like a collection of short stories that just happen to have melodies and catchy choruses. They even come with specific names. (That’s Beth Mackenzie watching TV and Yolanda Hayes working the DMV.) Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood write what they know and do so with an informed knowledge of pop music history, so there are Burt Bacharach touches among the early 80s grooves in “Strapped for Cash,” while much late-70s new wave is reborn in the band’s motoring rhythms for “This Better Be Good.” “Fire in the Canyon” presses country-rock into service. 80s synth-pop takes control of the title track. But the band always begins with the harmony-heavy, guitar-based pop rock that takes the finer points of the Beatles, Raspberries and Squeeze and turns them into contemporary commentary.

Fountains of Wayne lost much of their alternative rock reputation once "Stacy's Mom" launched them into the Top 40 (and garnered them "new artist" Grammy considerations about as belated as when Shelby Lynne won that award following a half-dozen releases). In a pleasant surprise, Fountains of Wayne didn't try to follow that hit single down an MTV dead-end, nor did they overcompensate by defensively reverting to the earlier sound of college rock favorites like "Sink to the Bottom". Instead, the band embarked on the pure pop journey of "Traffic and Weather" in their "92 Subaru" down "I-95", all the while keeping a diary of the trip with an eye for specific details that recalls Tom T. Hall. Various pop offshoots and time periods are revisited, such as the 80s throwback "Strapped for Cash", which even quotes the "...heart attack-ack-ack..." line from Billy Joel's "Moving Out (Anthony's Song)". Fountains of Wayne occasionally recycles a few of their former ideas to fit the radio-friendly mode, notably the mild psychedelia of "Revolving Dora" as compared to the more manic acid-trip "Go, Hippie", from their "Utopia Parkway" album. "Traffic and Weather" makes a few wrong turns along the way, but most of the 14 tracks prove Fountains of Wayne could be a worthy successor to advance the underrated tradition of great power pop bands if they ever decided to settle into such a defined (and often defiled) musical direction. However, the band's past detours made such a career move unlikely, which may be why bassist/vocalist/songwriter Adam Schlesinger followed that power pop dream by joining the supergroup Tinted Windows in late 2009. If it turns out to be Fountain of Wayne's final album, at least "Traffic and Weather" is a solid finale, and a lot of fun too.

Although Fountains of Wayne didn't enjoy mainstream attention until the release of "Stacy's Mom" in 2003, the band had already established itself as one of America's strongest power pop acts. Based in New Jersey, the group first appeared in 1996 with a mix of British-influenced songcraft, lo-fi production,...
