iTunes Review
No Doubt’s breakthrough, Tragic Kingdom, is best remembered for two key singles: “Just a Girl,” a hopping third-wave feminist anthem, and “Don’t Speak,” a Madonna-esque ballad about residual band tension (singer Gwen Stefani and bassist Tony Kamal were once an item). Dig further and you might be surprised. Titled as a wry nod to the double-edged nature of the band’s Southern California upbringing, the album is virtually kaleidoscopic in its run at various pop conventions. “Hey You” is a pastiche of Revolver/Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles; “You Can Do It” owes a lot to Parliament’s “Flashlight.” And the bouncy horns on “The Climb” eventually morph into a knowing evocation of circus-like sound. The band would grow even more adventurous in toying with its ska-pop roots, but this is a fine start down that road.
Customer Reviews
love no doubt, hate gwen stefani!
Man No Doubt was pretty good. Too bad Gwen Stefani's solo career sucks.
best no doubt
this is the best no doubt album ever each song is great. Beast songs:spiderweps, don't speak, just a girl, excuse me mr., you can do it, sundy morning, diffrent people and end it on this
Sun Pist!!
This was one of my first Cds and I still love it. I was 10 when it came out, but even though I was young, I was well aware of decent music. On the back of the Cd, there was a candy, and written on the candy, it said sun pist. At the time this seemed like the most profain thing so i hid the cd from my parents so that they would not take it away. Good times.
