Interesting sampler

I like the original well enough, as it has elements of earlier Asobi Seksu because, forgive me, I really couldn't get into their last album at all. Oh, but I tried. I am excited by the prospect of the new one. As for the remixes, I like the slow burn of the Painted Palms remix, but the Holy Others one? Well, upon listening to the preview, sounds to me like all they did was take the track, slow it down and add a minor flourish here and there. It was as if they were trying to make a Portishead track. I suppose it is a bit superficial of me, but it is an interesting idea, but does not make me want to buy it as it seems to dull. Like they did not even try. One man's opinion.

So close...

Musically speaking, "Trails" is not quite tight enough to be a truly great song, but it does have its moments. It is absolutely transcendent through the first chorus and on through the second verse. Unfortunately, the second chorus is somewhat anticlimactic, as Yuki seems to lose steam and opts out of the high note that ended the first chorus. Subsequently (from about 2:30), there's an extended break and a shift in focus that proceeds through to the end of the song. Oh, how I wish that the first chorus could have returned (in both structure and effect), but it never does, and so what should have been Asobi Seksu's best work in four years is a bit of a heartbreaker.

Bearing a hyper-stylized and glitzy graphic design sense, a pretty and petite Japanese female singer who sings alternately in Japanese and English, and a band name with a hint of nod-and-a-wink naughtiness (it's claimed to be a Tokyo-based slang term that means "playful sex"), Asobi Seksu come across like the latest Japanese import, the newest in a long line of ironic Shibuya-kei indie pop artists following Puffy AmiYumi, Cibo Matto, and Pizzicato Five. In fact, the quartet is based out of New York...
