Album Review
Three years after Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, it's great to hear that Dream Theater hadn't lost their überheavy edge. John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess, and bassist John Myung effectively peeled back the pretentious excesses of Six Degrees, turned them in on themselves, and came up with a leaner, meaner but no less ambitious outing. The centerpiece track, despite the fact that it is second on the disc, is "This Dying Soul: IV. Reflections of Reality (Revisited)." A tome about alcoholism and recovery, it's strident riff opens out onto vast sonic panoramas where pianos and rhythm section offer Petrucci the space he needs to take his guitar playing into overdrive. Also, lyrically this is an evolutionary track on the set; it opens doors for the rest of the narratives here. Whereas the opener, "As I Am," is an anthem of resistance and independence, from "This Dying Soul" onward, themes of acceptance, surrender, and willingness become the M.O. for transcendent transformation. Struggles with the past, new encounters, and near despair are common themes, as on the brilliantly textured and detailed "Train of Though." Note the beautiful interplay between the guitars and keyboards on "Endless Sacrifice," the insane drums and buzz saw attack on the intro to "Honor Thy Father," or the brilliant play on the intro to "Seasons of Whither" in the intro to "In the Name of God," before the almighty riffing takes it into crunchland with a deep, poignant reflection on spiritual and religious hypocrisy. This is hard, heavy progressive metal at its very best lyrically and musically.

a new twist
One of the major "problems" with Dream Theater to non-musicians is the fact that they are all immense players. At times they take technicality to the extreme, strange time signatures, exotic solos... These things are awesome to listen to for musicians, even if only for a sense of novelty. I, personally, love Dream Theater, as well as their insanely technical musicianship. However, many non-musicians find the music mostly very hard to listen to... With this cd, Dream Theater makes it a bit simplera and returns to their rock/metal roots while at the same time retaining a level of creativity and unpredictability that many Dream Theater fans crave. Some fans may be dissapointed, as it is definately a little different from their usual instrumental insanity. I however, rather enjoyed it. If you are a Dream Theater fan, youll probly pick it up anyways. If youve heard them before and just couldn't quite swallow it, try this album. Either way, a good cd, and refreshing as well.
Simply Amazing
All my life I have looked for some band that satisfies all of my music needs. Dream Theater never ceases to be that band. ToT has to be one of the best albums I ever listened to and/or owned. Lets break it down... 1. As I Am: Terrific song. Great guitar work and really great drum break in the middle. 2. This Dying Soul: Even better song (Part 2 of Mike Portnoy's multi-album suite beginning with The Glass Prison). The transitions in this song are great. Mike's drumming never ceases to amaze me (I wish I could play like him) 3. Endless Sacrifice: Not a bad song. I think the keyboard synth break in the middle was extremely creative. It kind of jumped around though. The music was a little choppy at times. 4. Honor Thy Father: What is there to say? Mike's drum solo at the beginning is awesome (short and sweet, but gets his point across). The instrumental break in the middle is deffinetly (spelled right?) the best part of the song, though. 5. Vacant: Not much to say. All it seems to be is a transition piece. Nice idea of the cello though. 6. SoC: I'm sorry, I'm not writing that title out. This is one of the most creative instrumentals in the world, by my opinion. Neat musical writings. Just cool. 7. In the Name of God: Got to be the second best song on the album (second only to This Dying Soul). Just the length of it amazes me. I cannot percieve how these guys can write stuff like this. In other words, every single song is good in its own way. Now, to all you Rush fans out there, I still think Neil Peart is the greatest drummer in the world. But you gotta admit, Mike is amazing! And to the same fans, I still like and listen to Rush. But you gotta admit, these guys are amazing!
A Change to Fix This Dying Soul...
Dream Theater goes for a heavier sound than ever before and delivers one of their finest works. Each of the tracks, except for the concise Vacant, are long even by Dream Theater's standards, yet all are well thought out and masterfully written. This Dying Soul continue's Mike Portnoy's alcoholism suite, and Stream of Consciousness is one of the band's best instrumental pieces ever. Be sure not to overlook this excellent album.
