Album Review
Composer Steve Jablonsky's second stab at setting music to images of military and science fiction carnage echoes the bold, overtly serious tone of its predecessor and remains the one bright spot in the notoriously one-dimensional Transformers series. Like his boss Hans Zimmer, whose studio Remote Control Productions he has spent considerable time in honing his skills, Jablonsky is a highly skilled sculptor of musical bravado. His deft blending of the orchestral and the electronic (as well as the punishingly percussive) yields fruit that is size appropriate to the film's giant alien robots/waste management vehicles.

Great Theme, Lackluster Overall...
It’s been 2 years since Jablonsky’s work for the first Transformers was released, and it was a moderately good piece of music – it had a few good themes that soared or jolted the listener, but nonetheless, it lacked intelligence, which is usually something suitable for a Michael Bay film. Much like the first, Revenge of the Fallen has a grand theme (introduced in the track, Prime) that is not only epic in terms of delivery, but very pleasing overall – though it DOES sound a tad too similar to the Autobots’ theme. The rest of the score is mildly disappointing, as there’s no evolution of the first film’s music (probably due to the criticism that it sounded far too similar to Jablonsky’s overlord, Zimmer’s work) and there’s slim pickings in tracks – 13 compared to the other’s 20. That being said, the theme more than likely is suited to none other than Optimus Prime (duh?) due to the tracks that follow, and their incorporation of said theme: Infinite White, Tomb of the Primes, the Matrix of Leadership, and I Rise, You Fall. Now, what works in the score is that it’s mildly fresh in new material, with only a couple tracks like Forest Battle and I Rise, You Fall that feature small snippets of music from the first score – the Autobots theme, and the conclusive tweak of it in No Sacrifice, No Victory are the only ones to make it in. What doesn’t work in the score is exactly what the other tended to falter on, and that’s diversity in its tracks. The Prime theme, while great, is featured far too much, much like how the Autobot theme, no matter how tweaked and fine-tuned, basically consumed much of the first release’s time. The action pieces aren’t all that well done, and are quite disappointing. Forest Battle and The Fallen’s Arrival are two very loud tracks, with nothing to offer. Heed Our Warning features some moments of quality, but eventually, it just descends into a less than desirable track. Other tracks like Nest (a track that is so worthless, why it’s on here, other than as noise, is beyond me) and Einstein’s Wrong are two that don’t deserve second listens. All in all, Revenge of the Fallen is disappointing at best. It features work that ranges from great, 5-star quality all the way down to 2-star mediocrity. The Saving Graces to the score are: Prime, Infinite White, Matrix of Leadership, and I Rise, You Fall – all feature the Prime theme, in various forms, but all beautiful nonetheless. If you’re curious as to whether Revenge of the Fallen has anything new to offer… it doesn’t. It’s enjoyable, but overall it’s forgettable.
Steve Jablonsky does another amazing job
I have been waiting a long time to hear what the next score for Transformers would sound like, and I definitely was not disapointed. This was incredibly well done with Jablonsky yet again showing his amazing mastery of music. Though I have not seen the new film yet, I feel already like I'm in the movie with this amazing album playing in the background. I recommend to buy the whole album, though for those looking to get only a couple tracks, these are the ones I recommend: Nest - This hopefully will provide the proper background for the group in the movie, and with the incorporation of a New Divide instrumental excerpt, sounds amazing. The Shard - The song definitely seems to build as it plays, making for an intense feeling. Matrix of Leadership - The ominous sound throughout leads to a small bit of Arrival to Earth from the first film, which creates a great finish. I Rise, You Fall - More than likely the number one song to be considered for purchase, it seems to be the closing one, and by far gives the grandest feeling.
EPIC on All Counts!
There are no words in the english language that describes the brilliance of this album.... so i shall make one up now... SCRUMTRULESCENT.
