Kelly Willis occupies a niche between the Nashville mainstream and the hipper shores of alt-country, and 2007’s Translated from Love represents her best work in nearly a decade. Her purring twang and saucily-slurred phrasing (with a hint of laughter or tears in nearly every line) is as beguiling as ever. The sunny abandon Willis brings to such tunes as “Nobody Wants to Go to the Moon Anymore,” “I Must Be Lucky,” and “The More That I’m Around You” is irresistible. She indulges her playful side with a gender-switching take on “Teddy Boys” (a British pub rock-styled tune) and a call-and-response rendition of “Success” (an old Iggy Pop favorite). From the bittersweet Tex-Mex ambiance of the title track to the early ‘60s teen-pop drama of “Don’t Know Why,” Willis blurs distinctions between rock and country, and producer Chuck Prophet’s use of vintage synthesizers alongside the acoustic guitars and banjos adds an extra sonic tang. Translated from Love speaks to any country fan who likes their music smart, heartfelt and just a little adventurous.

This is a perfect middle of summer driving cross country with the windows down record! In a perfect world "Sweet Sundown" would be blasting out of radios and earbuds all across the nation. Especially Texas!!!
Buy this album!
Kelly Willis does not dissapoint with her first album in several years. There isn't a bad song on the record. She channels her soft and romantic self on some tracks, but really rocks out on others. This album will transport you to Austin. Kelly puts the sap you hear on country radio to shame. She is brilliant and this is an exceptional album.
Makes me believe in country music again
I went through a major alt-country / Americana period in the mid-90s through the mid-00s. Haven't listened to it a lot lately. Kelly was one of the staples. I have to say, this record makes me want to listen to more. Kelly is just one of the best singers alive, period. There, I said it. Also, this record has more consistent quality in its material than her last couple of offerings. "Nobody Wants to Go ..." and "Don't Know Why" are absolutely superior examples of my favorite of Kelly's templates: the twangy rave-up. There are also several very solid examples of her others: the midtempo country pedal-steel driven song ("Losing You," "Sweet Little One," "Stone's Throw Away"), the slow weepy ballad ("Too Much to Lose"), the sassy girl-group tune ("Sweet Sundown"), the folky cafe song (title track). She just knocks the vocals out of the park in every mode. Terrific production and tone on this record. I love the judicious use of 12-string too, which is more prominent. Kudos to Bruce and Chuck. Kelly is playing in my hometown as I write this, but I'm not there. :( So I'm listening to the record and writing a review instead. Kelly, come back to Atlanta!!
