Album Review
American East Coast singer/songwriter Ellis Paul has always been successful at coming up with songs that seem to mirror the everyday foibles of small-town, working-class America. Here he turns the lens on himself and the dissolution of his marriage — the centerpiece of this very intimate, close-to-the-bone album. Strong playing out of producer Jerry Marotta and guest players Bill Dillon and Tony Levin frame the tunes in a highly supportive way. Highlights include "Did I Ever Know You?," "She Loves a Girl," "Seven," "Take Me Down," "The World Ain't Slowin' Down," "Angel in Manhattan" and the title track. An album full of sound textures and emotions big and bigger.
Customer Reviews
Great songwriting, decent production
Written in the wake of his divorce, Translucent Soul displays Ellis Paul at the top of his craft. These are songs of emotion and introspection, loss and anger, longing and hope. Lyrically and musically, Paul continues to hone his talents. Much of Translucent Soul sounds like it has been produced with an ear toward a radio-friendly sound, and some songs, such as "Take Me Down," "Did I Ever Know You?" and "Translucent Soul" lose their power through the production. For sheer quality of songwriting, this collection deserves a five-star rating. The production of the album, however, must also be taken into account. The intimacy of the lyrics and Paul's increasing skill as a guitarist both would have benefited from leaner production and sparser instrumentation, perhaps even bare bones solo acoustic guitar. If I could take away only half a star, I would, but the album must be considered as it is, not as Paul performs it live, or as it could have been. Five stars for lyrics and music, with deductions for production and arrangement.
