Album Review

The bulk of the double-disc Transmissions from the Sea of Tranquility is culled from a concert the Samples gave at the Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado in July of 1997. The Samples are at their best in concert, and many of songs on the album are actually stronger in this incarnation than they are on their studio versions. You would never know that Kenny James, Rob Somers and Alex Matson are new members — they fit right into the group's sound. There are a handful of songs that were recorded live at the Boulder Theater but without an audience, as well as some studio cuts. While these aren't as exciting as the live tracks, they do mark the first time the songs "Flying" and "Prehistoric Bird" have been recorded, and they also include the new song "Sacred Stones" and a version of John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels."

The Greatest Samples CD of All

The Samples at their best. This CD could serve as a soundtrack to life. Sacred Stones is my favorite. The other great ones are Indiana, Weight of the World, Watching the Wheels, Buffalo Herds & Windmills, & Conquistador.

Soul Music

As a lost college student wandering around Colorado in 1990 I started listening to the Samples one day at the suggestion of a record store clerk in Leadville. The music affects me as much today as it did then. My wife wonders why I keep an email from Sean Kelly saved in my in-box that says, "You bet!, Sean" when I wrote once to ask about tour dates. Anyhow, the versions of Buffalo Herds & Windmills, LSR, and many others are as solid on this album as any I've ever heard. Best possible music for a drive through Colorado - or a drive through anywhere for that matter. The music transcends genre, age, culture - I have gifted this to my in-laws in their 60's, 15 year-old cousin, friends in Africa, pastors, metal musicians, all with the same response: "Wow!" Buy it. Straight up.

Thsi is a must have. . .

This disc is essential for any existing fan and a great starting point for a newbie. By far as tight technically as they have ever been throughout. These guys are a blast to see live and gracious as well. Actually serenaded my girlfriend mid-concert as I proposed many years back. The wife still tells the story to anyone who has an ear. Great disc for a long summer car trip, BBQ or just hanging out on your own. On my top ten favorite albums list . . .highly recommended.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

With their relaxed, slightly jazzy pop, the Samples were one of the most popular touring bands of the early '90s. After a bad experience with a major label, the band began releasing their own records independently, building support through a grassroots network of fans. Through constant touring, the Samples were able to keep building their network of fans. They were also busy in the studio, recording three albums between 1992 and 1993. With none of their albums deviating from their folky, Sting-meets-the...
