Album Review

As the liner notes to the 2010 reissue of this album mention, Julie Brown was one of two major artists who can thank wacky radio host Dr. Demento for launching their recording career, the other being "Weird Al" Yankovic. Brown’s breakthrough novelty hit was “Cause I’m A Blonde,” which isn’t included on this debut album, but most of her other necessary cuts are, from the funny and funky title track to the too cute, Valley Girl-mocking “I Like ‘Em Big and Stupid.” The main attraction is most definitely the ‘60s-styled, girl group number “The Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun” which hilariously updates the teen tragedy song for a post-gun control world. If it’s camp you crave, jump right to “Girl Fight Tonight!” which is ever so fierce with lyrics like “When you told him he looked like Rob Lowe/Well that was the last straw/So now I have to tell him/You wear a padded bra”. As far as the music, it’s totally ‘80s with thin synths, early samplers, and bright, cutesy melodies, all of which help the novelty numbers sound more fun, but there are a surprising handful of semi-serious songs here and unless you prefer the thin sound of the era, they’ll just seem dated. Fans of ‘80s pop will likely find them charming and might notice that Madonna’s 1989 hit “Cherish” sounds an awful lot like Brown’s 1987 cut “Shut Up and Kiss Me.” Giggle at the thought of the Material Girl being influenced by the Madonna-mocking comedienne Brown, then giggle harder at the plentiful highlights which are all awesome new wave goofiness, to the max.

Great, but... Wait, there

Now we need the song "'Cause I'm a blonde" from " Goddess in Progress" on RHINO.

The last track

I love the last track, The Homecoming Queen's..... I remember seeing the video on MTV back in the day. It was GREAT!!!! I looked and looked for this CD but was in vein. I gave up and bought the record. I spent a mint that it was at a collectors store that the record was rare. This was back in like 1999ish. I then thought I would do a search on Julie Brown. I could not believe that is album was on there. I was soooo excited. I am glad Ituens is coming around and getting hard to find stuff. It is great.

Unique

This is a great album that I have listened to since I was a child. It's also an odd one in retrospect - Julie had already put out an EP, and after it got a little attention and combined with Julie's presence as an MTV VJ, she was signed to then major label Sire (home of Madonna in the 80s) and got a decent production budget for a second album, marketed as mainstream as possible. This resulted in quality productions of Julie's comedy songs and an attempt at mainstream pop. The songs are very 1987 in that sense, but 80s music is fun. Oddly enough, only the comedy songs were the singles - then why record tracks in the pop style of the (rather quite good) song "time slips away"? who knows? I also do not know how well this album sold , although it was in wide distribution. As a child I remember seeing it in many record stores until at least 1992.

I remember really enjoying this album. Julie co wrote most of the material on here including the pop tracks and her songwriting is strong. It's great that this is on iTunes now. Definitely download this if u like Julie or if u like fun pop music or esp 80s pop!

Not to be confused with the other MTV VJ of the same name, this Julie Brown is a comedienne, singer, songwriter, and actress best known for series of mid-'80s novelty hits, including “The Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun” and “Trapped in the Body of a White Girl.” Born in Van Nuys, CA, Brown began her career in the comedy clubs of Los Angeles and San Francisco, performing a campy act that mocked valley girl culture along with celebrities like Madonna. After a couple television sitcom roles and a small...
