Album Review
With the release of Travelogue: Blues Traveler Classics, Blues Traveler completes its major-label trajectory. Signed to A&M Records in 1990, the group achieved modest but increasing sales with its first three albums, Blues Traveler, Travelers & Thieves, and Save His Soul, then hit the big time with the six-times-platinum Four and its Top Ten single "Run-Around." A concert album, Live from the Fall, and a studio follow-up, Straight on Till Morning, each went platinum, but then during a four-year break bassist Bob Sheehan died of a drug overdose and morbidly obese singer/harmonica player John Popper solved his chronic health problems by having his stomach stapled. When Blues Traveler returned to action in 2001 with Bridge, the disappointing sales led to a parting of ways with A&M. And here, as sure as death and taxes, is the "greatest hits" album. Blues Traveler didn't really have many hits in the conventional sense; in addition to "Run-Around," only "Hook" made the Top 40, while the band achieved significant airplay with "Conquer Me," a live version of "But Anyway" (the studio version is included here), "Carolina Blues," and "Most Precarious" (the most notable omission here). Compilation producer Mike Ragogna fills up the nearly 80-minute running time with such album tracks as "Mountain Cry," on which Popper duets with Gregg Allman, and "The Mountains Win Again," which features slide guitar work from Warren Haynes. The only rarity is the non-LP B-side "Regarding Steven." Blues Traveler fans may miss personal favorites, but this is a good one-disc summation of the band's A&M catalog.
Customer Reviews
This is a Must! I had to give a review.
Alright. Everyone knows these guys because of the songs Run-around and The Hook but this album is simply packed with greats! From the opening guitar riff of But Anyway to the intricate harmonica solos and Popper's vocals in The Mountains win Again and Reguarding Steven. It's a damn good album through and through. I'm wrote this so people could get into the band not just their two radio hits, cause their other stuff is even better! I saw Blues Traveler @ H.O.B. in New Orleans because I knew their two popular songs. Sadly, I wasn't expecting much but got blown away. They are a complex and dynamic group filled with raw rock and passion. Best show I've ever been to and got two of Popper's harmonicas. Keep up the Blues!x
No HIPPIE!!!???
This is a pretty good collection of thier hits, but the 1st album they released on the early 90's (self titled) was by far thier best. "Alone", along with "Sweet Talking Hippie" are a classic set of jams, with some of Popper's best harp playing. That said, it's nice to see these songs wrapped together, especially with "Sweet Pain".
Travelogue: Don't Leave Home Without it
Never have I found a CD compilation of a group that is so complete. Most compilations always seem to leave off at least one song that deserved to be included. Not so with Travelogue. This CD fully encompasses the best of Blues Traveller. Ever since hearing them for the first time, I've been hooked on the unique sound that they possess. John Popper is a master on the harmonica and gives Blues Traveller the sound that sets them apart from other groups. My favorites on the disc are "But Anyway", "Optimistic Thought", "Run-Around", "The Mountains Win Again", "Hook", "Carolina Blues", and my absolute favorite "Canadian Rose". This album crackles with energy and is a great listen. If you're a long time fan of Blues Traveller or if you're looking for something new and different from the cookie cutter stuff offered today, pick up Travelogue. I think you'll be glad you did.
