Album Review

When At the Drive-In decapitated itself, it basically split a whole into two halves; the Mars Volta took up the more ethereal, spacy, and experimental one. This project seems to pretty much abandon the nearly radio-friendly station they had previously taken up with Relationship of Command by creating an epic-length masterpiece of quirky, spacious sound rather than the more upfront rock aspects (the half of which is now embodied in the other ATDI offshoot band, Sparta). With Tremulant, the Mars Volta threaten to outdo the sizzling body of work of their past lives with the creation of something seething and timeless, melding their more beautiful and transcendent styles with rhythmic battery and shimmering gloss. Cedric's vocals mesmerize, as always, backed with the odd lust of Omar's melody and the powerhouse rhythm section and keys. If this EP is only a taste of what is to come, listeners have quite a bit to expect from this outfit.

Greatness at the beginning

If you want to see the Volta at their peak when they where looking for their new sound this is the EP you are looking for, its only $2.97, so if you are a TMV fan, theres no excuse not to have this EP, im suprised that Cut That City is the most bought song on here, when Concertina is their best, Eunuch Provocateur is a great track as well, if you loved the De-Loused, Frances the Mute sound youll love this EP, but of course if you are a true Mars Volta fan, youll see this as a masterpiece regardless...

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric-Bixler Zavala's music always seems to amaze me from At the Drive-in and The Mars Volta (and De Facto, which I haven't listened to yet), due to all the complex melodies and riffs. The EP starts out very quiet for the first 2 minutes, then suddenly something crashes through the wall and everything starts up. This is "Cut That City", which has a relatively short main part, because when you take off the fisrt 2 minutes, it's only about 4 minutes long, but is still awesome. "Concertina" also knwon as an instrument from the accordion family or some kind of obstacle. This is a ballad and somewhat foreshadows what "The Widow" would sound like. There seems like there might be some spanish in there, but its hard to tell, you'll just have to find out for yourself. (It also has a cool xylyphone part, if that's what it is.) "Eunuch Provocateur" (I have no idea what that means) is a very space rock-ish tune and has weird special effects. Something you may notice is the weird "mumbling" in certain places on this song. This is supposedly children's vinyl records being played backwards (The first one, right before the singing starts, sounds something like "does your mommy and daddy spank you?" and the other one, at the end of the song, might be the itsy-bitsy spider played backwards. I'm not sure about this, but if you have something that can play music backwards in real time, you could find out. Anyway, this is an awesome debut recording and you should buy it right now if you like the Mars Volta. Seriously, right now.

Great Transition EP

The not-so missing link between At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta. The first step for anyone who wants to follow in the way of the Volta.

Biography

Formed: 2001 in El Paso, TX

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Picking up the pieces from At the Drive-In, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed the Mars Volta and wasted little time branching out into elements of hardcore, psychedelic rock, and free jazz that expanded on the boundaries of their previous work. Although their previous band's demise ultimately arrived before they were able to truly capitalize on their mounting commercial triumphs, the Mars Volta immediately impressed with their willingness to eschew conventional logic and push themselves...
