iTunes Review

When at the peak of their powers, ZZ Top are the tightest blues-rock band on the planet, as the airtight groove of the John Lee Hooker-like boogie of “La Grange” confidently attests. There’s a reason why ZZ guitarist Billy Gibbons is regularly featured in guitar magazines. His enviable tone, his spare, concise rhythms and his heavily melodic ideas — copped from ancient bluesmen, the Rolling Stones and Duane Allman, for starters — transform ZZ Top from a Texas bar band into serious rock arena contenders. Bassist Frank Beard and drummer Dusty Hill are joined at the backbeat and it’s pure excitement to hear them move in lockstep throughout their third album, the classic Tres Hombres. Bill Ham’s production is an unadorned beauty, barely using even reverb to embellish the group’s elemental sound. This live vibe brings an intimate urgency to the standard blues stomp of “Have You Heard?” and the extra funk of “Sheik,” while providing a stark, dry as desert drama to landmark tunes such as “Jesus Just Left Chicago” and “Move Me on Down the Line.” The expanded edition adds three live cuts that show the band in slightly looser form.

The best blues-rock album of the times.....or any time

A righteous mixture of the spiritual and profane, mystical and earthy served up in a Rockin' bowl of Texas Boogy'in' Blues over a bed of psychedelic gospel. Rarely will you find outtasite lyrics and funky grooves so perfectly fit together. A Top Ten Dessert Island album without a nano-seconds hesitation. The very best thing Frank, Dusty and Billy have done, so far (I am not givin' up hope).

Yes, There Was a ZZ Top Before the 80's

This album represents what ZZ Top are all about, blues, blues and more blues. "La Grange" is the most famous track off this album (notice the obvious John Leee Hooker influence). "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers" is my favorite offf this album. This is ZZ Top doing what they do best, paying homage to their blues roots. Not band for a little band from Texas! If you really want to hear more of thier bluesy stuff, check out "Deguello", their best album in my opinion.

This is not THE Tres Hombres album!

I wanted to buy Tres Hombres, the album released in the mid-70's, but this isn't it. I know because I was there (just like the 10's of thousands of other young people were) when Tres Hombres was released. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood but I wanted the album as it was. Remastered songs, YES, but a "changed from the original", NO. If you don't feel like shopping around then by all means own this ZZ Top essential. But for me, just like when I was looking to buy some Led Zepplin albums performed by Led Zepplin, not some cover band, I'll shop elsewhere. Again.

This sturdy American blues-rock trio from Texas consists of Billy Gibbons (guitar), Dusty Hill (bass), and Frank Beard (drums). They were formed in 1970 in and around Houston from rival bands the Moving Sidewalks (Gibbons) and American Blues (Hill and Beard). Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them national attention with the hit "La Grange," a signature riff tune to this day, based...
