Great greatness.

Terrific album. Artistically speaking it's a triumph. And for it to have come so late in Sinatra's career speaks volumes to relevance the man had decades after most would be past their prime. This album of course could have ONLY been done in the September of his years given its reflective theme. I have to be honest that I LOVE every one of the classic standards on this album. I believe it had been a while since Sinatra had recorded any standards and as he transitioned back into it -- he didn't miss a bit. While there are only a handful of then "current," songs that I really enjoy, "You and Me," being one reminding me of signature Torch Songs sang in the wee small hours of the morning. "Song Sung Blue," which could pass for a jazz standard, and "Just the Way You Are," because of the jazzy rendition. And of course "New York." Songs like "MacArthur Park," "Summer Me Winter Me," and "Something," irk me beyond belief. But that's all a matter of personal preference. They're still outstandingly performed. Despite the fact that Sinatra would later admit that a lot of people "just didn't get," the future segment. I think it's one of the most rousing, creative, internal and revealing approaches to music Sinatra had ever attempted. Excellent album! There's far too much in it to possibly be disappointed, and you likely won't be disappointed.

Frank Sinatra's epochal album

This album never ceases to amaze me. It is a salute to the American popular song and most certainly to the man that defined THE singing style of American popular songs. The album is broken into three tenses. The Past is made up of some beautiful Tin Pan Alley standards of which Sinatra makes use of one of his most talented arrangers Billy May. Frank's voice is both strong and fragile in songs like "The Song Is You" and "My Shining Hour". Look for the most humorous song in "They All Laughed" which is to my mind classic May arranging. The Present is a look at some of the best, if not exactly current (the listener must remember it's Sinatra's Past, Present & Future!) popular songs of the time and again it is superbly arranged by another of Sinatra's favorite arrangers Don Costa. "Just The Way You Are" is beautifully swung as is "Song Sung Blue". There are some exquisite songs that are seeing a debut like Alan & Marilyn Bergman's "You And Me (We Wanted It All) as well as "Summer Me, Winter Me". Sinatra takes a crack at Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender" and Ray Price's "For The Good Times" of which the latter is a duet with opera diva Eileen Farrell. The Present is full of wonderfully sung as well as arranged songs.Lastly The Future is a look at Sinatra's life in song totally written and arranged by Gordon Jenkins. There are a lot of critics that say this is the weakest of the three but I disagree. I think it is a bold move on Sinatra's part to do this work as he might have thought people would accuse him of egotistical leanings. The Future does not speak of how great Sinatra is, but of how incredible the life he lived is. It speaks of his loves, fears, and even secret desires. Gordon Jenkin's arrangements compliment his words magnificiently, leaving the lisener to wondering at times if he didn't reach into the past and pull Debussy, Beethoven and Respighi in for some arrangment assistance. It is fun to listen to all the tenses separately or listen to them chronologically, but I highly recommend listening to them all.

Terrific!

A "hard 2 find" album. Climax of Frank's carreer. The version of Joel's 'Just the Way UR' is awesome. If you're a fan this is a must have album..

Frank Sinatra was arguably the most important popular music figure of the 20th century, his only real rivals for the title being Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles. In a professional career that lasted 60 years, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to maintain his appeal and pursue his musical goals despite often countervailing trends. He came to the fore during the swing era of the 1930s and '40s, helped to define the "sing era" of the '40s and '50s, and continued to attract listeners during...
