When devout country music fans die and go to honky-tonk heaven, this amazing album could very well be the first thing they hear. On their second collaboration, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt sound like the three patron saints of high-lonesome harmony. Though Ronstadt sings lead on the opening Carter Family classic "Lover's Return," by the second verse it's evident that Parton's pronounced voice inadvertently stands center stage on most of these songs. Emmylou takes ownership of "You'll Never Be The Sun," as her inflections segue between fragile and powerful, like her late mentor Gram Parsons. And Ronstadt covers Randy Newman's "Feels Like Home," making it her own ballad. But Dolly's voice soars skyward and also bonds the other two harmonies together with such arresting aplomb on those, as well as on songs like "High Sierra" that you won't even mind when she changes the lyrics on Neil Young's "After The Goldrush" from "I felt like getting high" to "I felt like I could cry."

This is not the whole album!

"When We're Gone, Long Gone" is the missing track. And what's with the clean lyrics warning? I don't recall any dirty lyrics on this CD.

Not exactly a rip-off...

This CD was originally planned as a Trio project, but between solo projects , and what I've heard, Dolly and Linda arguing, it was shelved for awhile. In the meantime, thinking this Trio disc would never see the light of day, Linda released a lot of the songs on her solo album, "Feels Like Home", so that's why some are calling it a rip-off. Either way, the harmonies are great, and so is the CD.If you are a fan of one or all three, give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

These tracks did not appear on solo albums. Tracks from the aborted sessions for the first planned album in 1977 turned up on solo albums ("My Blue Tears" on Linda's "Get Closer" album, "Mr. Sandman on Emmy's "Evangeline" were two of them). It's difficult to find a country performer who has moved from her country roots to international fame more successfully than Dolly Parton. Her autobiographical single "Coat of Many Colors" shows the poverty of growing up one of 12 children on a run-down farm in Locust Ridge, Tennessee. At 12 years old, she was appearing on Knoxville television; at 13 she was recording on a small label and appearing on the Grand Ole Opry.
