Album Review
After Alien Ant Farm's deadly bus crash in 2001 in Europe, it was difficult to tell if the band would record again. Lead singer Dryden Mitchell broke his neck, a notoriously difficult injury from which to recover. But the California-based Alien Ant Farm teamed up with producers Robert and Dean DeLeo of the Stone Temple Pilots for truANT, an album that grabs listeners by the collar with "1,000 Days" and doesn't let go until the closing track, "Hope." The first single, "These Days," is so relentlessly addictive and hopelessly upbeat ("These days are great/There's work to do/Would you like to work with me?/I'd love to work you") that anyone who hears it will give in to its soaring vocals and staccato guitars. "Sarah Wynn" is an incredibly honest, touching plea for a girl to stop using drugs ("What the hell were you thinking of?/I can't help you now, Sarah/Why the hell were you shooting up?/Now you're coming down, Sarah"). The song is almost painful to listen to. "Tia Lupe" doesn't fit in with the anthemic rock that fills truANT, but it is nonetheless a snappy, Latin-inspired love song. These days music fans will be hard-pressed to find an album so satisfying.

truly Alien Ant Farm
The newest edition to the AAF library seems a little more mature and diverse than ANThology. The songs still have the same AAF flavor but the band mixes it up with songs like Tia Lupe and Glow which are these weird upbeat songs that may not be to everyone's liking. However songs like 1000 Days, Quiet, These Days, Goodbye and Hope made this album significant to me.
Better than ANThology!
When this album came out back in 2003, I wasn't really that exctied about getting it. ANThology, though one of my favorite albums, was getting old and I figured "truANT" would not be anything quite different. This album totally astounded me. 1000 Days has a catchy chorus that your singing along with first listen. Drifting Apart is even better, although much like ANThology days. Every song remains downright perfect in variance, structure, melody, catchiness, every category you could want all the was until Rubber Mallet. I just hate that song. But S.S. Recognize pulls you right back on track and "Hope" is exactly that: a hope that they will continue to make music as good as truANT. Little known fact, AAF was dropped by Geffen in October of 2005, just before producing their best album ever: 3rd Draft. You can pick it up by going to an AAF show for just 10 bucks. I would if you enjoy truANT whatsoever.
