Album Review
Holly Golightly's Truly She Is None Other is another fine slice of low-key bluesy garage pop from the former Headcoatee and current White Stripes crony. Unlike that band, however, Golightly doesn't have much truck for noise and clatter; she is more apt to use honey and guile to capture her listeners. Tracks like "One Neck," "Walk a Mile," and "All Around the Houses" are downright slinky with her double-tracked, deadpan voice; the lo-fi, high-quality production (courtesy of Liam Watson); and resolutely mid-tempo approach. Her songs are perfect for late nights full of melancholy and restraint. Even songs like "You Have Yet to Win" and "She Said," which might be considered examples of the dreaded "rocking out," are rocked out in fine, reserved style, never breaking a sweat — merely a heart or two. Most of the tunes (bar the previously mentioned "Fox" song) are Golightly originals, but the album also has a foray into acoustic blues with a convincing cover of Charles Brown's harrowing "Black Night" as well as covers of two little-known Kinks tracks: the rollicking "Time Will Tell" and the minor-key weeper "Tell Me Now So I Know," which are almost note-perfect (the vocal on the latter is one of her best ever). Truly She Is None Other is also one of Golightly's best albums; packed with great songs and performances, it re-establishes Golightly as a beacon of grace and restraint in a world sadly bereft of both.
Customer Reviews
Holly is Like Wine
She just keeps getting better and better. This album, unlike some of her earlier forays which delved heavily into themes such as revenge and bitterness (for instance tracks from Serial Girlfriend and Painted On), this work bubbles up with experience and wisdom from her deep well of a soul. Not to say this album is a wilting flower, not in the least; the edgy-ness is still there in her lyrics ("Walk a Mile") but its tempered. Just listen to her flawless rendition of "Tell Me Now..." If you don't know Holly, you are missing out on someone very special.
Quality
I bought this CD back in 2000 and listened to it constantly for about a year. The songwriting is skilled and it is delivered with passion. My personal favorites are She Said and Walk a Mile.
oh, golly gee damn!
let me begin by saying this is by no means a cross-section of her very strongest work, but i have to give it at least 4 stars because (1) it's holly golightly, for goodness sake, and (2) it's a fair respresentation of her refreshing kitsch-blues style. (i might describe her in the same words i've used for her cohort-contemporaries, the white stripes: 'their complexity lies in their simplicity.') tracks range from fun & playful with "walk a mile," "all around the houses," and of course "black night" (which you might confuse for a henry neilssen song until the lyrics start), to haunting and enchanting on "there's and end" and "tell me know so i know." overall, the album's as bubbly, bare, and tragic as ms. golightly's namesake.
