Truth EP Reviewed
A hawk is a messenger, a protector, and has been known to represent the mystic visionary. In Greek mythology the hawk would transport souls to the underworld, and anything that travels into that realm most certainly would bring back a message. Truth is a message from the Wisconsin band, RedHawks.
Formed in 2008, the band has played throughout the Fox Cities, located just south of Green Bay, Wisconsin. RedHawks are made up of Freddie Haas, vocals/guitar; Tate Sampson, guitar; Adam Voruda, bass; and Thomas Bishop, drums/percussion.
A pounding beat starts the album’s title song, “If You Need the Truth” which presents a simple relationship philosophy – sixth grade or sixty years old. Lyrically it examines turning away from ourselves, and lets the listener in on a vital message – actions are more prevalent than words.
What are “lights burning bright?” Is it a symbol of hard work and dedications, a name glowing on a marquee, or premature death like a sparked match that will engulf it self? “Reach out” provides the question, and the answer seems to be “take it slow.” Perhaps to savoir the moment- like the guitar solo in the song.
The next two songs are the white t-shirt, black leather jacket, and Fender guitar simplicity of a time feared as absent. All albums have sleepers – “Leave it Behind” and “Dirty Coins” will jump out after just a few times. One is a romantic tale, the trite tribute to “Let it be” wails a voice for it “ain’t seen in a man like me.” The other, “Dirty Coins” pours like blood from the open vein on this album. It pumps and would make Bruce Springsteen proud. Are we the dirty coins that are passed among people, or the relationship left behind?
Lyrically demanding and musically sound Truth is worth more than the five dollar cover charge for a debut album. Filled with many questions, Truth is an album with no answers for the extraordinary use of ‘it’ allows personalization of images and situations that leave the listener questioning.
RedHawks know Truth is a message only gained through the honest reflection put forward in this collection.
