iTunes Review
After insisting that the first version of her debut – a slick studio effort – be shelved, Sheryl Crow made Tuesday Night Music Club, a homemade-feeling effort that eventually catapulted her into the front ranks of mainstream rockers. The ballad “Strong Enough,” for instance, ultimately rests on a few instruments (acoustic guitar, lap steel, stand-up bass) and Crow’s full-throated cry. The album launched a row of hit singles, with “All I Wanna Do,” an adaptation of a Wyn Cooper poem, sticking the hardest, but it’s one of those discs where every piece feels like an important message from the source. Even working with a group of undeniable pros, Crow is a singer/songwriter who can see beyond her own nose. “All I Wanna Do” and “No One Said It Would Be Easy” limn working-class figures not often heard outside country or rap, while “What I Can Do for You” is a sketch of music-biz sexual harassment that could easily be the story of a woman outside the industry.
Customer Reviews
One of my favorites of all time
For those who ignore lyrics and listen to the music, the rhythm and notes and melodies, you will find that this is a well crafted and performed set of classic rock styles with a new rock edge. This is music to listen to while working or playing, it seems to go with any mood. For those who listen to lyrics, this album can be so personal it hurts. For me, this is one of those albums whose themes became a part of who I am. So of course I love it! :)
Kevin Gilbert
Add Kevin Gilbert as one of the song writers to this album. He also went out with Sheryl so thats pretty significant.
Fanastic introduction for a versatile artist
I'm quite surprised only nine reviews have been written and averaging only 3 1/2 stars. As Tuesday Night Music Club is the introductory album from musician Sheryl Crow, the listener is given a taste of the many musical influences in Crows' life. Blues, honky tonk, jazz, pop, down tempo - Sheryl Crow and her band cover a wide range of musical styles that seem to work well, coalescing into a very strong first album. From the bluesy "I Shall Believe" to the empowering rock/pop of "Leaving Las Vegas", Crow does a fantastic job in incorporating musical styles that might not normally blend well. "We Do What We Can" is a slow-tempo homage to jazz and its great musicians with Sheryl Crow's father, Wendell Crow, "singing" the trumpet to lyrics referencing the abrupt change in social and political climates during the mid 20th Century. Tracks such as "I Can't Cry Anymore" and "Strong Enough" are not so typical reinterpretations of relationship woes while "The Na-Na Song" seems more of a jam session with lyrics. Tuesday Night Music Clubs most well known track, "All I Wanna Do", seems the weakest, which is a shame as it is the most well known. If you're looking for something different and timeless, don't be mislead by "All I Wanna Do" and take a good hard listen to "Tuesday Night Music Club" as you might be pleasantly surprised.
