Album Review

On Nancy Wilson's previous album, 2004's R.S.V.P., the legendary vocalist teamed up with a given instrumentalist on each track. She must have liked the formula, because she's done it again on Turned to Blue. Here the oft-honored jazz singer leaves room in each number — save for the title track, a Maya Angelou poem set to music and arranged by Jay Ashby — for a different soloist, bringing in such heavyweights as Hubert Laws on flute, saxists Jimmy Heath, Andy Snitzer, Bob Mintzer (who appears to be summoning Stan Getz on the opening number, Gordon Jenkins' "This Is All I Ask"), James Moody and Tom Scott, pianist Dr. Billy Taylor, and steel pans player Andy Narrell, among others. Working with configurations ranging from classic big band (Duke Ellington's "Take Love Easy") to trio-plus-guest-soloist ("Knitting Class"), Wilson applies her seasoned but still flexible pipes to material both old and new, straddling the fence between adult contemporary/pop and the more demanding jazz of her earlier career. Heavy on the ballads, and confined nearly exclusively to love songs, Turned to Blue finds Nancy Wilson right where she ought to be nearly half a century into her recording career.

The Master at Work

How can you criticize the choices of one of the greatest song stylists of all time? Nancy has more precise musical instincts in her right fingernail than all of the "reviewers" on this page who would deign to question her choices. I am just so happy that she is still able to deliver us her wonderful voice and let us feel these words along with her. It is even more priceless to listen to her after hearing the youngsters out there laboring their way through simple songs and simpler arrangements. I've seen her live and I've adored her my entire life and, just as we should thank God we were able to see Michael Jordan play basketball in our lifetimes, so we should be happy that we got to hear Miss Nancy weave her magic.

Keep on Singing

Another amazing collection of songs from one of the true greats in the industry. Anyone who has ever seen Ms Wilson perform live will appreciate the "real" delivery of this ablum. She sings from the heart and you feel it in yours.

I just wish she sang MORE

The lady still has style, class and a voice. Granted, not as powerful at times, but she still can sell a song. Although the album is designed to feature talented new instrumentalists that are her background orchestra (THANK GOD ....LIVE MUSICIANS). I just wish she sang more on each song.
