iTunes Review

Cleveland’s young Dylan Baldi makes lo-fi, power pop-driven music, marked with the knotty murkiness of outfits like Woods and That Ghost. Both sunshiny and angular, Cloud Nothings hints at surf spray and California summers, and the songs here — in a cleaner studio setting — could easily go down the road of classic indie pop (from Material Issue to Sebadoh). Baldi’s teenaged take on alienation and his affinity for rough-edged guitar and sharp melodies make songs like “Hey Cool Kid” and “Turning On” both powerfully memorable and slightly startling in their observations. He moves with ease from Beatles-flavored buoyancy (“Strummin”) to No Age impenetrability (“My Little Raygun”). Turning On is comprised of the first Cloud Nothings EP, Turn It On, and a smattering of cassette-only releases and other efforts. An EP of later work, entitled Leave You Forever has a cleaner, brighter sound, and a single, “Didn’t You” (found separately on iTunes) gurgles and bubbles with a Buzzcocks-meets-Apples In Stereo exuberance. Both titles point to promising things for the Cloud Nothings album yet to come.

Great lo-fi power pop

Saw these guys last week at CMJ. Great lo-fi power pop that ol' Bob Pollard would be proud of. I'm loving this compilation, especially "Water Turns Back", "Can't Stay Awake", and "Hey Cool Kid". Baldi's vocals also remind me of Archers of Loaf-era Eric Bachmann (which is a good thing). I'd also recommend tracking down "Didn't You", a new wave-y single released earlier this year. This guy can write pop hooks on demand--I can't wait for a proper studio album next year.

A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

Finally!

The sunny, raw sounds of Cloud Nothings come from an enigmatic Clevelander named Dylan, who formerly made music under the name of Cat Killer. Like many lo-fi artists of the late 2000s (particularly Wavves, Women, and Neon Tongues), Dylan took interest in reviving cassette culture, releasing his singles on tape and embracing a maxed-out recording technique in his blissful music. Cloud Nothings’ eight-song debut, Turn It On, was released in a limited run of 50 CDs and 100 cassettes in 2009. Those...
