The French composer Alexandre Desplat has written music for more than a hundred film and television projects, including such 2009 feature releases as Julie & Julia, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and the second installment of the Twilight series, The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Composer Carter Burwell did a fine job on the first film in the series, 2008’s Twilight, and Desplat’s work on the follow-up is one of his best efforts. “New Moon” starts things off with the movie’s main theme, arranged for piano and orchestra; another cue, the delicately restrained “Edward Leaves,” reworks that thematic material to accompany a key moment in the film. It’s good to hear Desplat stretch out on two lengthy tracks, “To Volterra” and “The Volturi,” which effectively employs rumbling percussion, stabbing flutes, and string glissandi. The relatively spare “Dreamcatcher” utilizes guitar, flute, and other instruments to create a magical mood, and “Full Moon,” another variation on the main theme — and a fine one at that — closes the album.

breathtaking

In my opinion, far better than Twilight's score, but maybe because I love heavily orchestrated scores. It's so lush and layered, and absolutely spectactular. It reminds me of 1930-1940s romantic movies like Gone with the Wind. I love how it's a sendback to that genre. It maybe slightly over-the-top when listened along with watching the film, but listening to it in it of itself is a joy.

great soundtrack, love the pieces but i don't want all of them! Why do they all have to be album only???

I'm not a fan of Twilight and I don't see what all the hype is about. But honestly this is an amazing score. Alexandre Desplat is a true virtuoso and him and Chris Weitz hit gold with this one. I'm actually considering seeing the movie now.

French composer Alexandre Desplat is the son of a Greek mother and a French father who met in the U.S. while both were attending the University of California at Berkeley, married in San Francisco, and settled in France. He began studying the piano at age five, later switching to trumpet and then flute. Fascinated by both music and film, he decided to pursue a career as a composer of movie scores. Starting with Ki Lo Sa? in 1985, his scores for television and film had reached a total of 100 by 2007....
