Album Review

On 2 Drink Minimum, the same trio that created 1993's excellent Long to Be Loose is captured live at New York's 55 Bar, a little dive that remains Krantz's regular haunt as of this writing. Stylistically, the two records are quite similar, though Long to Be Loose is subtler and more polished. The tendency on these rough-edged live tracks is toward all-out funk assaults, extended solos, and high-speed ensemble riffing. Krantz's guitar playing is raw and heavily rock-influenced, yet his touch is extraordinarily precise and his compositions are derivative of no one. Bassist Lincoln Goines and drummer Zach Danziger can create rhythmic hurricanes when called upon, but they're also capable of great sensitivity. Essential listening for fans of gritty, non-commercial fusion music. ~ David R. Adler, Rovi

LO-FI recording...Amazing playing, though...

Skip this one if you are new to his music. I suggest the studio recording LONG TO BE LOOSE as the ideal way to get to know Wayne Krantz's music. Once you "get it", then come back to this album to see where he took it next. The reason I can't 100% recommend it is because this recording is very LO-Fi, done with stereo microphones...As the result, it can be a fatiguing listen. Drums and cymbals all over the place! The playing and the tunes are very cool, super tricky funky rhythms, amazing phrasing by the trio. Wayne is really burning here. Probably his most explosive performance ever captured on CD. I take one star off due to the lousy recording quality, which gets in the way of the complexities of the music itself. I guess Wayne thought the performance was so good (and it is) that it was worth taking the risk. Risk it at your discretion!

Hurt your head with music

This album ripped my head off and it's never been the same since. Krantz sounds like nobody else - nobody. Absolutely slammin' music with fearless improvisation, funkiness and a big puff of rock attitude at its core.

Intense

I heard Wayne on Tal Wilkenfeld's album (Jeff beck's new bass player) and was instantly a fan. He is great.
