iTunes Review

Two Matchsticks is the second release by the Wooden Birds, a band formed in 2008 by Andrew Kenny, former leader of the American Analog Set. Joined by band mates Leslie Sisson, Matt Pond, and Sean Haskins, the songs are performed primarily on acoustic instruments and augmented by simple yet effective percussion, subdued drumming, and warm electric guitar lines that provide beautiful texture throughout. Each of the dozen tunes is played at mid-tempo and an overall hushed approach applies to each track, yet monotony never sets in because the songs are so well crafted. Sweet, easy-flowing melodies are anchored by the honeyed harmony vocals of Kenny and Sisson, best displayed on the title track, “Company Time,” “Baby Jeans,” and “Too Pretty to Say Please.” The ways in which their voices interact is arguably the album’s greatest pleasure. Elsewhere, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie adds sympathetic vocals to the gentle “Warm to the Blade.” Rich and soothing, Two Matchsticks is a thoughtful collection that will appeal to those who appreciate subtlety and the less-is-more approach to songwriting.

The debut effort Magnolia, which featured appearances by Ola Podrida, David Wingo, Leslie Sisson (American Analog Set), and drummer Michael Bell (Lymbyc...
