What can't they do?
Let's take a moment to pause and reflect: Bloc Party has had one of biggest (however you choose to take that) years in alternative music. They put out a near-perfect album that created legions of devoted fans (Hi, there), managed to stir-up some controversy with some tracks (Thank you), they put out 13 remixes of said original album, toured all over the U.S. and Europe and back again...it seems these boys are taking some cues from fellow art rockers, Franz Ferdinand. Now, they release these 2 tracks. I think most fans will agree that there's something subtly different in Hero and Two More Years. I was about to rate these as 4 stars, because I didn't think they lived up to their own standards. Then I listened again and decided they may have done themselves one--two better.
Bloc Party, You Sly Devil
The melting pot of musicians and the originality that is their output is apparently once again going to grace us with their presence. Bloc Party is one of those bands that makes you remember the first time you heard them, what you were doing at the time, and that which whom you experienced the musical find with. (I personally was crossing a bridge on my street and driving with my mother at the point when they were being played on the local college's free radio by a man who said, "these are some Brits that I just heard of--I hope you enjoy," or something along those lines.) Bloc party tricked me into thinking they were a one-album band, but, how could they be with such potential they showed and released in Silent Alarm, their first album? As it appears, this next album by them, after their brilliant Silent Alarm release, will deffinately be done by them, for their style is so distinct; they love to stick with what they know. For that reason, I'm afraid Silent Alarm's songs as a whole started to become predictable--but, somehow, that's what I love about Bloc Party. Their steady, heavy bass and delicate guitar mixed with delightfully accented vocals makes Bloc Party an original and vibrant rock band. Hopefully with lyrics as difinite and songs as catchy, this beast from the east (or at least Europe, I was never really good at geography, anyway) will, rather than blow us away, sweep us up with this new album of theirs that I will buy and come to love as though it were a child of my own.
Nice addition to Silent Alarm
Bloc Party put together one of the most complete albums of the year in Silent Alarm. They backed it up with an amazing live show. These two songs made the playlist at the Atlanta show and were well received to say the least. No doubt we will be hearing great things from this band in the near future.
