Album Review

Bob James largely defined pop/jazz crossover in the '70s. Two, reissued by Koch, is typical of his output. Mixing together aspects of pop, R&B and classical with just a touch of jazz, James (heard throughout on electric keyboards) put the emphasis on catchy melodies and lightly funky rhythms. The results range from insipid to pleasant, with a brass section, a string section, and vocalists (including Patti Austin) utilized to create what is essentially background music.

Bobs Number Two!

This was Bob James in December 1974. Theatrical and multi themed selections like "The Golden Apple" is but just one reason to buy this very early recording. His first albums were numbered 1,2,3 and BJ4. I recommend all four.

Two Stars For "Two"

Pedestrian smooth jazz that borders on Muzak. "Two" suffers from a major lack of consistency; the confused James attempts to fuse classicism with psychedelia and everything in between to no avail. Overdramatic, corny and cliche, most of these tracks like "The Golden Apple" and "Farandole" are not worth listening to twice. Standout performances from versatile drummer Steve Gadd and competent guitar work from Hiram Bullock are not able to keep James above water on this album. Reccomended for senior citizens and use in elevators only.

Classic.

There is nothing left to say.

Bob James' recordings have practically defined pop/jazz and crossover during the past few decades. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured R&B-ish soloists (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.) who add a jazz touch to what is essentially an instrumental pop set. He actually started out in music going with a much different direction. In 1962, James recorded a bop-ish trio set for Mercury, and three years later his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes...
