Album Review

Toni Childs spits out lyrics on up-tempo tunes like rounds blasting from an AK-47. Unfortunately, she doesn't do many ups. She's easier on ballads and mid-tempo songs, but still register red-zone readings. The singer/songwriter has been labeled everything from alternative rock to pop/rock — everything but the soul singer she is. Aretha Franklin singing an album of folksy tunes doesn't make her a folk singer. Childs' recordings reflect the material she writes, which is not necessarily the direction that's best for her; with the right producer, she could be Tina Turner. This collection features not only her compositions (the ferocious "Don't Walk Away," the heady "I Just Want Affection," and the Janis Ian-ish "I Met a Man"), but a couple she didn't scribe, such as Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers to Cross."

Raw Emotion

It's so sad when Britney Spears--who couldn't sing to save her life-- sells millions of studio over-produced albums, and a true artist like Toni Childs does not get the airplay she deserves! She has a voice to die for (DON'T WALK AWAY--is a masterpiece) with lyrics that have deep meaning and significance. I've heard her live and she chilled me to the bone! Can't wait for new album due out this year

Uniquely Toni

So many times you hear an artist and say 'they sound like...'. Toni Childs sounds like no one I've ever heard. Nor lyrically, does she write like others. It has a down side, I'm sure; because she doesn't fit the music industry mold. Thank God! Her lyrics and melodies, use of obsure instrumention, and amazing voice; set her apart from the generic grind of music that was shoved down our throats in the 80's and 90's. A true singer/songwriter more interested in putting out art with integrity, rather than shaking her ass in a video. BRAVA!!

Toni Childs is incredible

I saw her in concert years ago in San Diego. She sang herself hoarse to an intimate group and finally stated that her voice simply could not carry on. Someone called out, "then just sit and talk with us." And, she did for awhile. THAT'S how intimate her concerts are. If you have a chance, by all means go. It's a concert you will likely never forget.
