The best I've heard these performed!
With exception to the late Jery Goldsmith's own rescore of the Original Motion Picture, these are the best I've heard these themes presented. Hearing the TOS score with a full modern orchestra is a very special treat. The consistancy of each recording also keeps your mind anchored in the world of Trek. Some of these themes, played at proper volume levels, actually bring a tear or two when you truly feel what they each stand for and represent. What a world...the world of Star Trek.
Not the origional recordings--But still great!
I have this album on CD, and it says clearly on the back that these are "Not original soundtrack recordings from [Paramount]". And indeed they are not the orgional recordings, but they are extremely good versions, IMHO just as good as the origional recordings, if not better (excepting the TOS theme, which is abbreviated). Sound quality is better than some of the origionals too. All of the themes are beautiful too, music-wise. If you want Star Trek themes, this is still the best single album to buy!
Great With Cheap Headphones
This is a decent soundtrack. However, if you are educated musically the entire trumpet section will get on your last nerve. I'd recommend using some cheap headphones so you won't notice some serious mistakes. NO BAND DIRECTORS NEED BUY THIS ONE! No phrasing and a lot of missed and cracked notes. ARGAAAAAAH!!! Got some overly-aggressive college students playing for cash I suppose.
