One of Houston’s hardest working lyricists, Chamillionaire has been working overtime these past few years turning out dozens of his own ambitiously wordy verses as well as ghostwriting for the likes of Paul Wall and a host of lesser known Houston MCs. On Ultimate Victory Chamillionaire crafts more slick, sing-a-long hooks to consolidate his newfound popularity but is careful to balance hardcore lyricism and thoughtful production against the occasional flash of commercial gloss. The standout tracks here are among the best that Chamillionaire has ever produced. “Pimp Mode” sees him trading artful boasts with UGK’s Bun B, while on “Hip-Hop Police” Cham and Slick Rick rail against what they see as the media's hypocritical assault on Hip-Hop culture. Though these tracks prove that Chamillionaire can trade verse with some of the best MCs in the game, Ultimate Victory sports its share of filler, particularly the leaden “Party Like a Rockstar” knock-off “Rockstar” and the lazy lothario poses of “I Think I Love You”. Nonetheless, Ultimate Victory is a showcase for some of Chamillionaire’s finest verses and is well worth the attention of anyone interested in the Houston scene.

Chamillionaire-Ultimate Victory

After having one of the best records in "Ridin", Chamillionaire serves his sophomore disc, Ultimate Victory. With so much hype around 50 and Kanye, Chamillionaire proves he has the truth. The Morning News: Kane produces the introductory "Morning News" with synth, heavy bass and snare. "Hip hop, crunk music, hyphy music, snap music, sounds like a nursery rhyme get a beat and rap to it, ain't speakin with a purpose, I'ma call it crap music," he spits. Nice start. 3.5/5 Hip Hop Police: Lead single, J.R. Rotem produces a gem, synth, string and piano ending, the uptempo production was perfect for Chamillionaire's storytelling. Metaphors of hip hop history are evident, "we confiscated The Chronic and The Clipse, Diary that you had and all your Blueprints" referring to Scarface's "The Diary", Jay-Z's "Blueprint, group Clipse and Dre's "Chronic". Slick Rick makes a good performance, great to see him back. 4.5/5 Standing Ovation: Kane is back with a nice production, bass heavy with bouncy piano and guitar jamming lines. Nice hook as Chamillionaire, keeps it smooth and has a quality track. 3.5/5 Won't Let You Down: K-Ci has a great hook of gettin that paper, as Chamillionaire's fluid and smooth delivery fit the synthy production. Solid track. 3.5/5 Industry Groupie: Another fabulous J.R. Rotem production, sampling "Final Countdown", one of the best productions on the album, the building production is fit with a solid hook and lyrics. "ain't nothin more for us to talk about, like Unk told ya take 2 steps toward the door and just walk it out", as he mentions Akon, R. Kelly, Pitbull, Juvenile among others. 4.5/5 Pimp Mode: Happy Perez's smooth Texas production with synthy and assisting guitar make a syrup gem. Chamillionaire's lyrics flow nicely and the hook is golden, Bun B drops a great verse. 4/5 Rock Star: This may seem like a typical rock track that rides off of "Party Like A Rockstar", however it was actually created before "Party Like A Rockstar" with a Disco D beat. Disco committed suicide, so he changed the beat produced by the Beat Bullies, it wasn't bad, Wayne drops a decent verse. 3/5 The Bill Collecta: I know what you all are thinking, this sounds like "Ridin Pt. 2". Once again produced by Play N Skillz and featuring Krayzie Bone, it is similar, but it still sounds good. The hook is catchy, as Chamillionaire talks about getting his money from those that owe him. It will have success, but less than the original "Ridin". 3.5/5 The Ultimate Vacation: Chamillionaire relaxes a bit with the nice "Ultimate Vacation", Beat Bullies have an organ based beat with a good hook. Nice track here, that is smooth. 3.5/5 Come Back To The Streets: The Runners bring the repetitive hook and Koopa keeps it street, it isn't entirely hard, considering the out of place hook, but it works. 3.5/5 I Think I Love You: Beat Bullies have solid production, Chamillionaire talks about the pros and cons of money, how it can be trouble, but lovable. Great concept, basically Biggie's "Mo Money, Mo Problems". 4/5 The Evening News: Kane's bass heavy and synthy line work well, Chamillionaire creates one of the best tracks of 07. Ranging topics from VA Tech, Osama Bin Laden, Hurricane Katrina, Don Imus and gas prices. Spitting "Kanye just said WHAT? the president ain't got time for that, the white house is gonna stay white, even though we know Obama's black". Great track, with a solid hook. 5/5 Welcome To The South: Another building and bass heavy beat, Pimp C makes a solid appearance as Chamillionaire gets at South haters. Solid hook. 3.5/5 You Must Be Crazy: Koopa has some fun with this track, as Famous joins him on this pumping bass track. 3.5/5 We Breakin Up: A soulful guitar production and voice background, Chamillionaire creates a decent one here. 3/5 Rocky Road: Great soulful skit before, as Happy Perez's soulful beat is great. A great reflective track of struggle, as Devin The Dude adds a solid appearance. 4.5/5 The Ultimate Victory: Great ending here, Happy'z production is excellent and this an extremely reflective and personal track. Great ending. 5/5 Still Countin My Cash: Solid bonus. 3.5/5 Ultimate Victory is a major improvement from The Sound Of Revenge. His debut wasn't bad, but this is just incredible material. His lyrics are witty and powerful, yet still being able to keep that southern touch musically. It is one of the best albums of 07, with concepts and cunning metaphors. With a few missteps, musically, lyrically it is very complete, focused and fitting with the bass heavy production and fluid lyrics. His friendly warm voice and breath control is great, and his outspoken tracks are what hip hop needs. Rating 9 out of 10
