They lost their charm

This album is such a disappointment. The band lost Michele, the one thing that distinguished them from the hoards of other bands that are now doing the emo/piano rock thing. I am a massive fan of The early stuff, Existentialism on Prom Night and Another Word for Desperate. But this....sad. I just recently saw these guys play a live show and it was terrible. You couldn't understand a word he was singing, or should I say shouting. There were almost no melodies in the vocals of any of the songs. It was a major disppointment

Still 5 Stars, But a Bit More Honest

I'm reviewing this E.P. agian after having listened to it alongside with many of their past work and i have just a bit more to pick up on with my last comment. There's nothing untrue i had said about my last comment for this E.P. and i still think its an excellent addition of songs to a band with so much to offer. but after more listening i've got a bit of critique. I ask that people who know this band as well as I give this review a chance to be read and considered, as it is coming from a HUGE fan since the beginning.

A reviewer had said that this E.P. is missing some "atomosphere" that made their other three releases part of their signature sound, and i could not be more in agreement, here's why: No matter what styles SR has tried over the past few years there had always contained something that was more than just a catchy melody, or relatable lyric. It was the combination of sounds and styles they made that had the power to fill all corners of my soul with sheer beautifulness, not just temporarily pleasing my music buds. Just listen to "Existentialism on Prom Night" "Buttoned Down" "For The Best" "First of the Century" etc

This is what the E.P is lacking in a sense, It isn't completely void but in no way does it compare with their first 3 releases. "Wait and Watch" and "Try" are perfect examples. Let me not to mention that the lyrics in this E.P. are incredible, probably some of their best, but its how they are delivered that doesn't draw me in. The choruses "I'm going to wait, and watch the world die" and "I try to find a way just to say what i'm chasing"....repeat themselves numbingly and are quite "copy and paste" if you ask me. I'm very glad however that "Ten Ton Shoes" doesn't have the same issue, as it flows without repetitiveness and builds up beautifully towards the end. The song reminds me of "The First of The Century" my favorite Straylight Run song ever.

Another problem is how John decided to record his vocals, they are double-tracked! I know Michelle is no longer beside him but i always thought that he could have handled it on his own very well, but the double-layered vocal tracks give off a sense of awkwardness, and are a bit overproduced. Go listen to his vocals on an older Straylight Run song, none of them are double-layered, it is when they are single and straight forward that makes the song feel more personal.

Well i'm done and many of you are going to slam me for this, but for the least i can say this is coming from a serious SR fan, i own all of their material in cd format, i've seen the band live numerous times and met them on occasion, and i'm sticking to them till the end because i believe this band has alot of courage and knows how to do what they personally please, I'm giving these 5 stars all for that.

A Vast Improvement

After being sorely disappointed by "The Needles The Space" I was skeptical about giving this EP a try, but luckily I did. Although only three songs, they are a return to the Straylight Run I knew and loved from their previous first album and EP. John Nolan's vocals are great on this EP and the songs are greatly enjoyable. If you're only going to purchase one song though, be sure to buy "Ten Ton Shoes" it is a little different, but great.
