Album Review
With Jencarlos Canela being a heartthrob telenovela star, it’s only natural that his second effort, Un Nuevo Día, be primarily filled with romantic ballads. The opening title track and the following hit single “Mi Corazón Insiste” are both lush and sweet as they come, but rather than just play up the pin-up worship Jencarlos attracts, these songs benefit from the man’s growth as a singer. The tales of love, lust, and heartbreak are delivered more convincingly than before, with Jencarlos sounding more confident to pour his heart and soul into these numbers. Combine this with uptempo numbers that are attractive (“Solo Quiero Tu Amor” being the best), a guest appearance from Miami-based rapper Pitbull (“Baila Baila”), plus a moving duet with the legendary José Feliciano (a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Aleluya”), and the singer’s sophomore effort easily tops his debut.
