iTunes Review

If 1994’s American Recordings introduced Johnny Cash to a new generation, 1996’s Unchained solidified the relationship. Less austere than its predecessor, this album turned Cash loose in a roots-rock setting (with able assistance from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers). The force of his personality unites its disparate material — and, with few exceptions, the tunes are fully worthy of the artist. Cash’s feel for threads of connection between musical genres enables him to re-imagine Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage” and Beck’s “Rowboat” as time-honored folk ballads. From the vagabond anthem “I’ve Been Everywhere” to the reflective ballad “Memories Are Made Of This” and the redemptive title song, there’s a sense of mature wisdom and acceptance pervading these tracks. Amidst all the sober ruminations are good-humored moments like “Mean Eyed Cat,” a tune Cash first tackled in the ‘50s. The album doesn’t have the feel of a comeback effort — there’s no desperation to sound “relevant” here. Unchained is the work of an archetypal artist making music for the ages as well as for the moment.

Awesome, Legendary Sounds from the Man in Black

Better than the first American recording with Rick Rubin, equally as good as American III and IV. His voice does not sound as old, worn, and tired as on IV and V, and many of the songs are more upbeat. My favorites here are "Sea of Heartbreak", "Rusty Cage", "Kneeling Drunkard's Plea", and "Unchained". Listen for Tom Petty's backing vocals on a few of these. Highly recommended.

Southern Accents

Southern Accents is available under Tom Petty's music on iTunes. Yes, one of a kind "music for the ages."

Johhny Cash is the man

Johnny Cash is said to be a Country Western star but by far I believe that he is Rock N Roll from the get go. The song I've Been Everywhere is one of my favorites by far along with Rusty Cage. So if you like or love the Immortal Johnny Cash then you will want to buy this album.

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock &...
