iTunes Review
By 1983, U2 had developed a reputation as being one of the most ambitious and soul-stirring live acts in the world. While its studio albums certainly expressed the great breadth of the band’s sound and vision, it seemed time for U2 to let those that hadn’t yet made it to the arena find out what they were missing. Sure enough, landmark tunes such as “Gloria,” “New Year’s Day,” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” immediately gain more aggression and sound more anthemic as they’re paraded out in front of gushing fans who spur the band’s adrenaline to impressive performance heights. While much attention is deservedly paid to Bono and his histrionic gestures and quantum faith in music as a healer of the scars, this live collection spotlights the band’s much underrated rhythm section, as bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. anchor these songs with a ferocity that enables the band to tear it up even when handling a song as sweet and yearning as “40.”
Customer Reviews
First review for this album. Excellent live album from U2, released in 1983!
1983. U2 released their third album "War", fueled by hits "New Year's Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and were embarking on the War tour to promote the album. This live album helped establish U2's reputation as a remarkable live band, and was produced by Jimmy Iovine. An accompanying concert video of the same name was also released at the same time as the album, although many tracks performed at the concert (such as "Two Hearts Beat as One") were not included on the album or video. Unlike the album, it was recorded entirely at the dramatic outdoor Red Rocks Amphitheatre on 5 June 1983. Steady rain, large lighted torches surrounding the stage, and the natural cliffs of Red Rocks provided a dramatic context for the video. Segments of the video were frequently shown on MTV and helped expand U2's American following. U2 recording at Red Rocks was subsequently selected in Rolling Stone's list of the "50 Moments that Changed Rock and Roll" WARNING: During the recording of "The Electric Co.", Bono included a 27 second snippet of Stephen Sondheim's "Send In The Clowns". When the "Under A Blood Red Sky" LP was released, U2 failed to get permission and pay the appropriate licensing and royalty fees to include that piece of Sondheim's tune on the album. When Sondheim objected, U2 agreed to pay a $50,000 (US) penalty for the unauthorized use and to press all future releases with a new version that did not include the 27 seconds of "Send In The Clowns." So, you will NOT hear that bit on the new re-release.
Classic live album, but buy the DVD
Unless you don't already own Under a Blood Red Sky, buy the DVD. I can't say enough about the album -- it was the first I ever bought in 1983 -- but for the reissue I was hoping for the complete Red Rocks concert, including the snips of "Let's Twist Again" and "Send in the Clowns." But, alas, it's not to be had. The DVD contains the full concert, minus the snips, but the CD/iTunes download is just the same old album.
Amazing album but be warned, its been edited!
I have loved this album for 25 years. This album and the concert video that went with it, is what made me a huge U2 fan for the rest of my life. But, I noticed on both the new DVD release and this new Remastered album, that "The Electric Co" has been edited. There WAS an amazing moment in the middle of the song when Bono does a vocal solo and it has been literally removed from both the DVD and CD. I would recommend to anyone buying this who hasn't heard it before, to do what you can to get the ORIGINAL copy of that song that was released, because it's much better. I would have given this 5 stars if not for this edit butcher job. I'm guessing its some sort of legal issue, but U2 should have ironed that out somehow, especially since the original release has been out there for 25 years now, I don't see what the big deal is.
