iTunes Review

Following in the success of their first collection of ‘60s covers, Under the Covers, Vol.1, power popster Matthew Sweet and the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs reconvene to pay tribute to the ‘70s with help from Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham for his “Second Hand News,” Dhani Harrison for his father George’s “Beware of Darkness,” and guitarist Steve Howe for the Yes prog-rock classic “I’ve Seen All Good People (Your Move/ All Good People).” The selections are eclectic and cover an incredible amount of musical ground, beginning with the hippie swagger of the Grateful Dead’s “Sugar Magnolia” through glam rock with Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes,” seductive radio pop with the Raspberries’ “Go All The Way,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” and Bread’s “Everything I Own,” Americana courtesy of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Here Comes My Girl,” and cult-status obscurities via Big Star’s “Back of a Car.” Each tune is delivered with incredible finesse, as both vocalists nail their parts with unusual smoothness and flawless musical backing. The duo is quite the human jukebox.

Great album from two icons

Great album from two masters of pop. They chose the right songs, and the harmonies are terriific. Its even better than Volume One.

Awesome album

This is a great album. A few songs like Second Hand News and You're so Vain stick out, but this is really more of an album which should be listened as such, while drinking some jasmine tea or a nice cold beer on your back porch, wearing flip flops.

Really Great

I'm surprised I had neve heard of their cover albums until today. Really great compelations. I think I prefer the 60's one a little more, simply because I have a bit more of an afinity for those songs. Really great job on both their parts and excellent orchestrations. I do have to say, as one who loves Carly Simon...I just don't think anyone else should do that song. Carly has such a distinctive, great voice that it's one of those that are really tough to live up to. And I really like Susanna Hoffs and her voice, but that particular song didn't work for me. Though, I think they both totally nailed the Mammas and Pappas song Monday Mondy on their last covers album. Overall, a real treat. Both talented musicians and singers.

Biography

Born: October 6, 1964 in Lincoln, NE

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

After spending the '80s as an unappreciated jangle pop guitarist with Oh-OK and Lloyd Cole, as well as a solo artist, Matthew Sweet emerged in 1991 as the leading figure of the American power pop revival. Like his British counterparts Teenage Fanclub, Sweet adhered to traditional songcraft, yet subverted the form by adding noisy post-punk guitar and flourishes of country-rock, resulting in an amalgam of the Beatles, Big Star, R.E.M., and Neil Young. Recorded with guitarists Richard Lloyd and Robert...
