Album Review
Hamilton, Ontario's Threat Signal are something of a rarity in the increasingly overcrowded field of Scandinavian-style black metal, and it's due entirely to one key factor: singer Jon Howard just plain ****in' rocks. Most contemporary death metal bands are unintentionally hilarious because in the wrong hands, the now-clichéd "death grunt" vocal style makes the singer sound like a constipated Muppet, and it's hard not to giggle at something like that. Unlike most of yer more melodically oriented death metal bands, which usually have one of the guitarists providing clean vocals in counterpoint to the lead screamer's shredded larynx bellow, Howard handles both styles on Under Reprisal, and while his clean vocals are perfectly good, it's his screaming that really pins the listener's ears back. (To put it in strictly Canadian terms, he really knows how to give 'er.) There's nothing comical about Howard in full unrestrained bellow, because he largely ignores the dangerous lower register in favor of a sound that recalls old-school metal vocalists of the Ronnie James Dio stripe, jacked up on triple espressos and unresolved anger management issues. Add to this the fact that the songs are both melodically strong ("A New Beginning" kicks off with an opening guitar riff that could be this generation of budding metal guitarists' very own "Sweet Child o' Mine" before locking into a killer stutter-step unison riff that sounds like a funkier Pantera) and suitable for full-on banging, and Under Reprisal is clearly one of the better pure metal albums of 2006.

Your Favorite Bands All In One
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to combine some of your favorite bands to see what they sound like? When I first heard Threat Signal, I could hear so many different influences ranging from Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, a little Linkin Park and a dash of Norma Jean but they still keep their own unique sound. From shredding guitar riffs, powerful bass, precise drumming, and an amazing range of vocal abilities. A few songs that stuck out to me immediately were: Rational Eyes Now Seeing Red Haunting I love this whole album either way and strongly recommend you check these guys out or you're missing out on an amazing band!
At the forefront of their genre!
I first heard "Rational Eyes" a few years ago on GarageBand.com and I was immediately impressed. After buying the entire album, I would now say that is my least favorite song, because there are so many good songs on here. It seems like every review that you read on iTunes for metal albums are five star ratings, yet you listen to samples and are less than impressed. This album is a sledgehammer without doubt. I definitely hear influences of Fear Factory and Meshuggah. Unlike a copycat band like Pizzing Razors, Threat Signal takes on old theme and makes it their own. I might add that there are some awesome guitar solos on this album in addition to the pounding guitar/bass riffs. If you like any of the bands above, this album will seriously demolish them(as much as I love those bands)
Under Reprisal
The last 5 - 10 years have left me longing for a new band to shake my world; something I could wrap my mind, heart, and ears around. This is it. I have a new favorite band. These guys are absolutely phenomenal. Extremely heavy, but tempered with keenly simple melodic pieces (some of which are shocking amidst the crunch, but with the impeccable transitions, they are gorgeous segments to behold). Filler-free is an understatement. Every moment is deliberate and inspired. For those of us fortunate enough to listen to this talented, original band, a spine-tingling musical experience awaits.
