AT LAST!!!!!!
At last the Dragonland Chronicles have returned! Oh my God!!! This album is totally worth so much more than $10! Epic story line! And the band has gotten so good over the past 5 years! Impressive! All the songs are worth buying! I cried at the end of the album it was SO AMAZING! Probably the best album of the year! Aah! Too many exclaimation points!!! ;D
But seriously. Buy it. DRAGONLAND FOREVER! <3
An Amazing Power Metal Album
I know that people often use hyperbole when reviewing a new album, but I do not hesitate in saying that Under The Grey Banner should be considered in the same league with great power prog albums like The Keeper Of The Seven Keys Parts I & II, Nightfall In Middle Earth, Land Of The Free, Awaken the Guardian, and Inhuman Rampage.
The variety of instrumentation, the quality of the songs, the vocal work by a cast of strong vocalist, not all from the metal community, and a cohesive storyline all combine to make this album a future classic. The most engaging aspect of the album is the songwriting team of guitarist Olof Mörck and keyboardist Elias Holmlid. The duo have composed an album that could pass as a fantasy movie soundtrack. In fact, directors should be beating down their door. Holmlid is also a one man symphony. His keyboard and programming work on the album is jaw dropping.
Supplying the heavy is technical genius Morten Lowe Sorensen who unleashes some insane blast beats on the album, a first for Dragonland, giving parts of the album a death metal feel which heightens the tension in the story. His intonation in the fast parts is dead on, and his playing on the slower sections is just as interesting. This is a young drummer whose reputation is only going to continue to grow as he turns in performances like those on this album.
The guitar duo of Mörck and former drummer Jesse Lindskog hold things together with impressive rhythm and lead playing. Bass players in speed metal often have a hard time finding space within the music, but Anders Hammer does a good job of holding down the bottom end, keeping the album from sounding too thin, a problem with standard tuned guitars and high pitched vocals.
Speaking of vocals, Jonas Heidgert, who I thought really found his voice on their last album, Astronomy, delivers his best performance her. You can hear him channeling the great Michael Kiske at time. No small feat that. Joining him is the album's secret weapon, Fred Johanson, a veteran of musical theater. Imagine how Gandalf would sing, and you get the picture. Also joining in are all three vocalists from Amaranthe, Mörck's more mainstream metal band. While Heidgert is the principal vocalists, having the other singers contributing makes the concept of the album come alive.
It was 5 years, almost to the day, that the band released their last album, and those 5 years were well spent. I was nervous when I heard that they were going to write another fantasy-based album after recording a really creative and refreshing power prog album which explored sci fi and mythological themes in Astronomy, but my fears were put to rest with each passing song. Now, if they would just re-record the first two parts of the Dragonland saga with this same cast of voices and musicians, THAT wold be epic.
SHOCKER!
I will be honest, i haven't liked Dragonland that much since i first heard their song Storming Across Heaven. While that song has grown on me (ide give it 4 stars), this album COMPLETELY blew me away! I would definatly rank this in my top 5 favorite albums. Solid vocals, great musicians, and a 5 star delivery! Favorite song on the album: The Tempest.
