iTunes Review

Following in the musical footprints of fellow Glasgow twee-rockers Belle & Sebastian (whose Stuart Murdoch has helped the band in the studio), Camera Obscura delivers a literate, sprightly take on retro-'60s pop. Rainy day ruminations, French New Wave film romance, grammar school kitsch, and junior high school puppy love all to create a tender, idiosyncratic world untouched by modern musical advances. Their second album, Underachievers repeats much of what made their debut Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi such a likeable collection. "Suspended From Class" emphasizes its similarities to Petula Clark pop. "A Sisters Social Agony" recasts singer Tracyanne Campbell as a doo-wop earth angel with perfectly swooning "oohs" layering but never overwhelming the lush arrangement. "Your Picture," with an unexpected vocal from guitarist John Henderson, sounds as if it were surgically removed from Leonard Cohen's debut album. Their influences are impeccable and what they do with them equally impressive.

Awesome indie-pop release

Underachievers Please Try Harder is an excellent example of indie pop. Clearly taking queues from peers Belle & Sebastian, they make delicate, witty gems. The female vocals are charming, along with the great melodies. My personal favorite is "A Sisters Social Agony." The tracks are all good, but some stand out from the rest. While most of the tracks mellow, and rather delicate, they do not all sound the same. A fan of twee-pop should definitely buy this CD.

not to be missed!

It is hard not to listen to the first song "Suspended from Class" over and over and over and over....

The Best of All Worlds

This album is great to listen to with full attention, and it's also good just to have on while you're doing other things like puttering around home or driving around town. It's upbeat and yet ironic, with classic British-type Folk-Rock rhythms and rhymes and Girl Band sensibilities.

The Scottish ensemble Camera Obscura formed in 1996, when vocalist Tracyanne Campbell, percussionist John Henderson, bassist Gavin Dunbar, and guitarist David Skirving began creating lush indie pop with orchestral flourishes and romantic lyrics.
