iTunes Review

A collaboration between the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle and Franklin Bruno that first recorded as the Extra Glenns, the Extra Lens bring about Undercard as their long-awaited second album. Darnielle handles the lead vocals and most of the songwriting with Bruno handling the arrangements and writing a few songs himself. As always, Darnielle focuses on details and intense emotional points. The straightforward cover of Randy Newman’s “In Germany Before the War” makes for a completely logical choice among the emphatic declaration of “Adultery” and the anti-suicide message tune “Some Other Way.” Bruno’s “How I Left the Ministry” adds a battle-march cadence with plenty of stray instruments acting as bullets. “Rockin’ Rockin’ Twilight of the Gods” sounds like old-school Darnielle, along the times of The Coroner’s Gambit. “Dogs of Clinic 17” adds some nice strong guitar work. “Cruiserweights” sounds like it’s escaping the cocktail lounge of a black-and- white movie. Darnielle is one of the most prolific and stunningly good songwriters in modern times and Bruno makes a fine accompanist.

This album is amazing

Sometimes dark, sometimes playful, always enjoyable, this is for anyone who's ever enjoyed a mountain goats record. Simple instrumentation, but very tasty. One of the best albums of 2010.

poetry and a constant collage of visual image set to brilliant music sung with spare understatement blends together seamlessly with all pieces fitting together and not treading on each others toes the worst part of this album is it is too short

Stimulating, Poetic Lyrics

John Darnielle is definitely one of my favorite lyricist. Every track is like a short story woven out of five dollar words that you wouldn't hear in any other modern song. He somehow coaxes a tangle of words to flow effortlessly and creates a sweet, smooth ballad. For anyone who loves the Mountain Goats, give the Extra Lens a try. It won't disappoint.

The Extra Glenns were an underground legend for almost ten years before their album saw the light of day. A collaboration between Nothing Painted Blue's Franklin Bruno and the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle, the duo recorded several singles and compilation tracks in the early '90s, then disappeared entirely while concentrating on their other projects. As their individual popularity grew, the two continued to work together when given the chance, and the songs that would eventually appear on Martial...
