Album Review

Fela, still due for more of a surge in popularity than he ever really got, has one more chance posthumously with this album. A number of songs from across the entirety of Fela's long career are represented, from the old Koola Lobitos days up through the Egypt '80 period and a short cooperation with Roy Ayers. All of it, though, is remixed by Chief Xcel. The remixing is somewhat minimal — no flights of fantasy, breakbeats, and the like that comprise the usual course of events in a proper remix album. For the most part, it just seems like the recordings have been cleaned up a little. In actuality, Xcel has doctored the songs pretty thoroughly, but kept them well within the groove that Fela set up. As such, most of the time it's difficult to tell where Fela ends and Xcel begins, and that certainly works to Xcel's credit. Not just any fan of African music, but any fan of music should listen to some Fela. The remasters on MCA are available and fresh as always, as are a couple of new compilations (Music Is the Weapon of the Future is an excellent one), but The Underground Spiritual Game is also worth a hearing or two for its mix of classic and new.

Don't buy this

Don't buy this. All of the tracks are edited/shortened..... A LOT! Do yourself and all of your friends and family a favor and go buy the original albums with the songs in their full glory. iTunes has them ALL suprisingly. Only someone with no real concept of Fela's music would shorten his songs and re-release them. If Fela were alive, he would be furious.

I Keep This Album On Repeat!

I was familiar with some of Fela's work prior to purchasing this album, but I must say this particular mix gave me insight into this man's music I had yet to experience. This is a perfect blend of some of Fela's best work! Chief Xcel did an extra-ordinary job mixing and presenting an historical masterpiece to those of us who already know and love Fela Kuti's work and those who have yet to discover his genius. If you love great music, this is a must have!

Fela is...Nigerian Bob Marley, Mile Davis, and James Brown

Anyone who has an electic music collection such as I do, you need to get this cd or any other Fela cds that are offered through I-tunes. I must say I was surprise that I-tunes has a vast collection of Fela cds.I-tunes gets star points for that. I paid twice as much for my cds, but I don't regret the 27 Fela cd I own because his music will take you on a musical odyssey .Check out his son Femi Kuti too. YOU WILL NOT REGRET PURCHASING THIS CD.

It's almost impossible to overstate the impact and importance of Fela Anikulapo (Ransome) Kuti (or just Fela as he's more commonly known) to the global musical village: producer, arranger, musician, political radical, outlaw. He was all that, as well as showman par excellence, inventor of Afro-beat, an unredeemable sexist, and a moody megalomaniac. His death on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS deeply affected musicians and fans internationally, as a musical and sociopolitical voice on a...
