For their fourth album, U2 enlisted the help of producer Brian Eno and his protégé Daniel Lanois, an engineering team noted for their experimental and ambient recording styles.The overall moodiness here makes for an entrancing listen of a group about to be catapulted into the stratosphere of superstardom. In 2009, the band issued this 25th Anniversary Edition that further expands on what is now clearly one of their most important and transitional albums. Recorded at Slane Castle, Ireland, where the album’s initial sessions took place, outtakes such as the wordless “Yoshino Blossom” and “Disappearing Act,” a track from 1983 the band recently finished up, sustain the album’s moody pull. Live cuts from the Wide Awake In America EP (“A Sort of Homecoming,” “Bad”) showcase the band’s continued peerless live authority. Atmospheric b-sides such as the instrumental “Boomerang I,” the Joy Division-derived “11 O’Clock Tick Tock” and the wordless “Sixty Seconds In Kingdom Come,” two remixes of “Wire” and an extended mix of “Pride (In the Name of Love)” are among the many highlights.

Incredible!
U2 are in a rare pantheon of artists, being together for over 30 years, fans get the rare gitft of seeing the band evolve musically before their collective eyes. The Unforgettable Fire was the first album produced with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, and represents a huge leap forward both musically and lyrically. This album represents the sound of the band that would become the mega-selling act for decades to come.
The remastering reveals whole new layers to the music, a crispness and clarity that only enhances the epic tracks like THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE, BAD and PRIDE (IN THE NAME OF LOVE.) The bonus material confirms the power of the bands live performances, and growing strength of their songwriting, with tracks like DISAPPEARING ACT and YOSHINO BLOSSOM so strong, it's surprising they didn't make the final cut of the original album.
The Unforgettable Fire is a timeless album by U2, and one well worth revisiting.
My favorite U2 album made even better
U2 always do such an amazing job with their reissues and this is no exception. I was very excited to hear that my favorite U2 album would be getting the deluxe treatment and in addition to some really cool bonus tracks, the album upgrade itself sounds incredible. I don't always think that remastering is essential to a relatively recent album, but in this case, it makes a huge difference. They've been doing 'Unforgettable Fire' live on this tour, too. Definitely a highlight!
The Unforgettable Fire -- Remastered
'The Unforgettable Fire' was the epicenter of U2's musical presence, in my life. I was in 8th grade and had already been aware of U2, specifically through the constant radio playings of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and 'New Year's Day', from the 'Under A Blood Red Sky' album. Then, in the fall of 1984 a new single called 'Pride (In The Name of Love)' had hit the airwaves. The sound of Edge's guitar hit me right away; and the depth of feeling, in the lyrics and in Bono's delivery pulled me in for good. I had worn out two copies of 'The Unforgettable Fire' on cassette, by the time the band made its' historic appearance, at Live Aid. That day's performance of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and especially 'Bad' left me with no choice, I had to own every piece of U2 music I could get my hands on. That proved to be a challenge, over the years; but with these recent remastered deluxe editions, U2 is filling in all of the vital gaps that had me frustrated for so long. It's great to hear this album and remember when U2, however popular at the time, were still something of a "college band". 'The Unforgettable Fire' was an experiment, for the band and they still hadn't quite finished developing into the standard bearers they would become, with the release, of 'The Joshua Tree' three years later. This is a priceless snapshot of a band, on the launching pad, as the countdown is approaching zero and they are soon to be catapulted to outer atmospheric levels.
