Album Review

The short and appealingly quirky debut by the Kingdom, Unitas claims to be a fictionalized biography of the legendary Baltimore Colts quarterback, but don't believe it for a second. The only through-line on this album is the way each short, punchy, indie rock tune is preceded by a distorted female voice with a possibly fake British accent, detailing the title of the upcoming song and its purported place in the album's mythology. The songs themselves are D.I.Y. indie pop of the first order, filled with layers of tape hiss, wheezing inexpensive keyboards, churning electric guitar lines, and a haphazard rhythm section just barely keeping the whole thing together. The male/female vocal blend of guitarist Charles Westmoreland's strangled yelp and keyboardist Jenna Roadman's helium-pitched, zero-affect harmonies is strictly out of the Indie Rock 101 playbook, but Westmoreland has written some compelling tunes here. The opening "I Am Constellation" is the highlight, but the four proper songs out of these eight tracks are uniformly strong. Perhaps the pretensions of the rest of the album will be exorcised on its follow-up.

Beautiful.

I don't know why people are trashing this album. I bought it a while back and came on to look for their new album. I'm amazed that iTunes doesn't have it. Unitas is one of those albums that kicks on my headphones. When it comes on shuffle I get all giddy inside. I walk down the street excited, happy, and..... well ..... excited. This is a great band and a great EP.

ummmm, anyone else sick of it all

Hooray, another soft band that wishes they were original, and even better, a lead vocalist who wants to sound pretty and touching even though he cant sing and is imitating somone else who is imitating someone else. Work a little harder.

Don't listen to the above posters... Though don't buy the entire album...

It's childish to just throw out other bands and say their better... Review time: This album is great... except for the fact that you have to pay for stupid songs like Delta 49 yard line, Gamma 68 Yard Line.... stuff like that b/c it's not even a song... The song A Bended Razor Shape, Arcadia of my Youth... and I am Constellation make up this album... the rest is just fluff... that's just annoying... But those songs are great! The Kingdom has this like... 70's Garage band feel to them... their main vocalist... has got a bit of a goofy voice... BUT if your into unique sounds and spiffy music... download a few of those songs... and I'll prove my point.
